Yes it is an odd description. It is actually the water temp sensor. It finds a home in the center right end of the cylinder head below the distributor

Finally after 2 years of chasing this though 3 transmissions I found that the shift lever was bent below the shift ball.
Found it when putting in one of Cedda's shift bushing kits (great kit !!!)
How did it happen? Probably when the shift lever was heated and bent to allow the driver better reach several years ago
