Main Relay Harness Connector

22 May 2011 - 10:49 PM

My CRX uses a main wire harness from an '86 Si, and is converted to electronic fuel injection. At some point, for an unknown reason, somebody cut one of the 7 wires coming into the PGM-FI main relay harness connector (a black one), just several millimeters away from the connector, and then soldered it poorly to another thicker wire (white) that continues below the dash. I moved my main relay to a new position, and after gently tugging on the wires, the soldered connection came loose on that wire. There's very little room to work with there to solder, and with so little wire (~5mm), it's impossible to twist 2 wires together to solder them well. Moreover, I've tried unsuccessfully to get the female pin from the black wire removed from the harness connector. It seems to be in there for life, unlike other Honda wire harness connector pins I've removed in the past.

The best solution that I can think of is getting another main relay harness connector, with several inches of wire coming off the connector, for all 7 wires, and using that instead. I can cut off my existing harness connector and then solder all 7 wires back together with the ones from the new harness connector.

Just tugging gently on the main relay, without removing it from the harness connector, ended up causing my 15 amp ECU fuse to blow, and perhaps also the main relay as well, although I don't know that yet. And that was before the soldered connection completely undid itself. One third of the wire strands were still intact at that point. Clearly a very high quality soldered connection is necessary here, and I cannot do so with so little wire to work with.

I'd like to hear input from others here, and perhaps there are some other suggestions that I've not thought of. I doubt that anybody else has encountered this situation before, because I really can't see why anybody would've cut a wire so close to a harness connector. I bought this wire harness used from a junkyard back in '97, so it was probably done by the junkyard or under the ownership of the junked car owner.

I believe that the wire harness connector I need should match up with all '85-'91 CRX/Civic models, as well as the '86-'89 Integra, '86-'91 Prelude Si, '85-'89 fuel injected Accords, and '86-'89 Legend. I suspect it may also match up with 2G Integra and '90-'93 Accord as well.

Does anybody out there have this main relay wire harness connector, with at least several inches of wire, for all 7 wires, that they're willing to part with for a fair price? I presume that Honda doesn't sell individual harness connectors, and that I'd need to buy the entire wire harness in order to get one.

Since I'm looking for all possible solutions, as well as a potential seller of this part, I will post this in both the technical and WTB sections. Potential sellers, please send direct email to me at:
