Rebuild Problems

24 July 2014 - 06:32 AM

Hey guys, it has been a while.
I've taken a break from my 87 CRX (D15A3 Rebuild) for several months and I'm finally ready to get it running correctly!

It has been rebuilt
Block: Honed, Decked
Head: Resurfaced, Valve Job, Upgraded springs
Transmission: Rebuilt, Lightweight Flywheel, New Clutch
All new Gaskets, Injectors, Lines, Hoses, Bearings, Piston Rings
Performance: Stage 2 Cam REGRIND from Colt Cams

Here is what happened. I got it together and running. It has been blowing white smoke since I started it, puff of smoke on startup, idles jumpy and high (2500k), will smooth out, then start bouncing, it starts smoking at idle after about 5 minutes or if you rev it. The exhaust gas smells like fuel, the oil smells like fuel as well. It also starts running hot after about 10 minutes.

I have drove it about 50 miles. My buddy says that the cam could be causing the o2 sensor to tell the injectors to dump alot of fuel because of the wacky A/F ratios. This is causing fuel run down to go past the rings and smoking because of the unburnt fuel.

I have a stock cam that I have been thinking about putting in to see how it runs. My questions are:
1. Do you think the aftermarket cam could be causing the excessive fuel?
2. Does the smoking and gas in the oil mean its getting too much fuel?
3. Could the Stock cam fix this?
4. Do I keep the AEM Cam Gear on or switch to the OEM one?
5. Do I need an adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator and could this fix it?
6. Can excessive fuel or an aftermarket cam cause the engine to run hot?

I have a buddy who is coming to look at it tomorrow. I asked if I should put the stock cam or leave the aftermarket cam in. He said its up to me. What would you guys do? I decided to put the stock cam in. when I did I put the timing belt on (I didn't time it, just slid the belt off and back on because I used the AEM Cam Gear and just marked the gear and belt) but now the car just turns over, doesnt fire. Does this sound like a timing issue?

Sorry for the long winded post. I have so many questions and I'm getting frustrated, I just want this thing running right especially because it's my first build.

THANK YOU GUYS
Jeremy

EDIT: Was doing some research, could my Engine timing be Retarded by accident because it seems like that would explain alot of my issues. Should I try the aggresive cam with the stock cam gear? It seemed like the AEM Cam Gear was a little off when I installed it.

Thanks again!

B18A1 In 87 Crx, Worth It?

24 March 2014 - 12:37 AM

Hey guys, so I have my build thread on here. I rebuilt the stock D15A3 engine in my 87 CRX Si and got it running. The thing is it is giving me problems (blowing white smoke and other little problems such as hunting idle, high idle, etc.). I redid the suspension and am going to paint it soon as well as the interior.

I have a 91 Acura Integra that is sitting in my yard with a "fresh" rebuild (about 30,000 miles on it) and it runs like a champ. What do you guys think about me pulling out the stock engine and restarting by going B-Series with the CRX? It's an expensive change but would open up much more aftermarket support and get rid of all the damn vacuum lines!

Mounts:$350+

Axles:$300+

Notes: You must use an SK7 Manual Transmission Intermediate Shaft (90-93 Integra Style) with custom  axles.
On an 84-87 Civic you will need knuckles from the 86-89 Integra. Be sure to adjust your toe -in/out after changing to the Acura knuckles. As with most swaps we recomend leaving all mounts "finger tight" with the engine properly secured, until your engine/ mounts are in place.

Other things you may need:
EK B-Series T-Bracket – Rear Bracket
Complete set of custom axles
Wiring Harness Conversion
Custom Length Shift B-Series Linkage

Just a little quick research on some parts, not sure what all I need but I thought since I have the acura I would be able to pull all wiring, ecu and such..

I just bought a new vehicle so that leaves me with:

87 CRX Si (Project)- I want to finish because I love the car

91 Integra (Ugly car with new interior and nice Engine)- Either sell it or use the engine for the CRX or Civic

98 Civic HX (Old DD with no AC, CEL, Needs Complete Suspension Overhaul, and Oil leaks)- Fix it up and sell or Integra engine?

09 Lancer GTS (Beautiful DD)- Car Payments, but I love it

What do you guys think? Pull out the Teg engine and do all the work to put it in the CRX? Would it be worth the work? Keep working on the Stock CRX Engine and fix it? Sell everything? Ideas and comments would be great!

Blue Smoke

30 October 2013 - 01:19 PM

Hey guys I recently started my 87 crx si up and after rebuilding it, new bearings, rings, valve seals, and all that good stuff. Well after getting it started I ran into a few problems such as a leaking water pipe, faulty thermostat, cracked radiator, bad injectors, and fuel line leaking. Got all of those taken care of and now when I drove it around blue smoke is just barreling out of it, mostly during acceleration, at idle it smokes but not as bad as it did before. It's probably been driven 5 miles but it just smokes so bad it looks like I'm setting off a smoke screen. compression was at 150 across the board. D15A3 engine

Fresh Engine Not Starting

16 October 2013 - 06:13 PM

Hey guys so I have an 87 crx si fuel injected D15A3, I have done a complete rebuild on it, I got it all hooked up and tried to start it. Fuel line was leaking right before the fuel filter so I fixed that, fuel pump is priming and fuel injectors seem to be spraying. I turned it over a few times to build up oil pressure with out the injectors plugged in. plugged them back in and went to start it up.

It turns over very quickly as it should but wouldnt start, every couple seconds it makes a pop almost like a back fire, I tried this a few times then shot some starter fluid in to the intake manifold and it started up for a few seconds then died, it seems like it is really trying to start but something isnt letting it, any advice?

Thanks guys! I'm so close I just want this thing running!

Water Hose/gasket/engine

07 October 2013 - 02:30 AM

Hey guys this is my first buildand i'm trying to get my D15A3 (EW4) in my 87 CRX and running. I put on all the Water hoses and I believe they are correct, one question I have is...
1. Does the tube on top of the Thermostat Housing (with a 90degree bend) connect to the hard line (the two black tubes, one is the vacuum line between the air intake piping and the valve cover, the second is a water line) and then that goes into the top tube on the intake manifold(next to the fuel rail)?
So, Thermostat housing-heater hose-black hardline tube-heater hose-intake manifold.
I hope that made any sense.

Now involving the Oil Pan Gasket, while applying the water lines I tilted the engine on the engine stand so the oil filter and intake manifold were pointing up, the oil started pouring out where the gasket is, I quickly turned it rightside up. I used a cheap oil pan gasket from a rebuild kit, I torqued the bolts correctly, I used RTV Sealent along the block and oil pan mating surface. So I drained the oil and was going to turn the engine upside down, remove the oil pan and replace the gasket with one from Autozone.
2. How do I put on the oil pan gasket? I tightened the bolts from the middle out hand tight, then I torqued them all. Some parts of the gasket seemed to of "squished out."

3. When removing the engine off the engine stand, how do you attach the Flywheel, clutch, and transmission? Just looking for advice for that part

I hope any of that made sense, I'm learning the hard way how I could of done things better and how to be more effiecient next time around. Thanks for all the help guys!
