I just put my 86 Civic HB Si on the road about a month ago and noticed right away that the clutch was much more stiff than it used to be. I practically have to stand on the thing to shift....just waiting for the cable fail. I swapped the engine and transmission from a fresh (75k miles) CRX. The clutch worked fine in the other car. What could have happened?

have you cleaned around the arm thing that sticks out of the gearbox, there might be crap all around it making a sticky and hard to move, maybe the cable has gunk in it, it could be lots of things

My clutch pedal always felt like crap in my 86 sedan, I adjusted it, and it was better for a while.
I finally put up the cash for a brand new clutch cable from the Honda dealership parts center, and it was a world of difference.

You could try coating the exposed cable with lithium grease or something.
