1985 Crx Hf: The Gas Saver Project

B13pnoysentra's Photo B13pnoysentra 02 May 2011

Hello I'm new to the forum. I have already posted pics of my ride in the Hot 1st Gens thread, but I figured it's time to make a build thread as this car is now DEFINITELY a keeper. When I was first looking for a gas saver, I was looking into Geo Metros and Suzuki Swifts. My friend suggested to me that I should buy a CRX HF like he did (his is a second gen) and should get good MPG. When I was younger I always wanted a Honda. But there was a time in my life that I became strictly a Nissan guy and was biased on my opinions. But as the years progressed, I learned to appreciate all types of cars and respect other enthusiasts for the effort they put into loving and building their cars. I never knew this first gen CRX existed, or noticed it for that matter. So when I found it on craigslist, I was skeptical at first because of the recessed headlights and the weird chopped off rear rolleyes.gif. But when I saw her and drove it around, I knew I had to have it. So far I've been loving every second of owning this little nimble car, despite having only 50 horsepowers at my disposal. I love how it can carve corners and let the driver feel like everyday driving is not something that is supposed to be boring. I've had it for over a month now, and it's progressed a little bit since then, but has cost me a few bills in the process =). As I've looked into swaps available for the car, I became more inspired to actually make it more fun to drive, despite our $4 per gallon price here in California. In fact, I'm even planning to do a D16A1 swap in it over the summer. I already have the donor integra ready for surgery, but after sharing with some people on g1teg.org on what I'm about to do to a perfectly good integra shell (I'm trying to sell the shell over there when I'm done), they don't seem very happy unsure.gif

Anyway here's the pics:

Just got it (all stock except the steering wheel and muffler) and here posing with my friend's 2nd gen HF

Let's modify (goodies from the junk yard and craigslist):

86-87 Si Spoiler and mud flaps from an EF Sedan (the magnaflow muffler has been cut off and sold)

Degreaser + Pressure Wash

Lowered 1 1/2 coil and added some hubcap meshies

Right now as it sits with 15x7 195/55/R15 tires from Craigslist:

Look who decided to be an organ donor:

BTW:

This is the origin of my user name: It's a 1994 Nissan Sentra B13. I have had this since I was 17 and had 5 more cars (3 SE-Rs and 2 NX2000s) of this chassis model over the years

That's all so far. Be sure to check in from time to time to see my progress. Thanks for looking!

Well I do plan on keeping the HF motor around just in case anything happens to the D16 (or maybe get another CRX with a blown motor to swap it into), but I am planning to take the car to the track in September (Thunderhill Raceway Park) in Willows, CA and thought that the extra power and ground control suspension would make the car more fun, instead of racing with just the HF motor.

Looks clean. Those look like original seats re-skinned in "leather." I wonder why they hexed the headrest? Lowbacks were probably the cool thing at the time, but man that can turn into a literal pain in the neck quickly. The reskins kind of interesting, but lowbacks have never been my thing.

Overall though, I'm digging that car and it's not just because mine has the same color scheme tongue.gif. Very clean looking body, I'd love to have no rust. >_<

UPDATE:

I put the car up on craigslist for sale or trade to see if anyone was willing to trade me a 1g CRX. I was hesistant to pull the motor from a good running car and decided it would be beneficial for both me and a buyer if I was to sell it instead. So I got a call from another 1st gen CRX HF owner who was interested in buying my car and trading me his CRX. It was a win win situation as this car had a blown head gasket and was perfectly ready for a swap.

1987 year model CRX HF. Body is going to need some work but not too bad. The steering column switches (i.e. headlight and wiper switches are broken though). Can anyone input if the integra steering wheel and switches can swap over to the CRX? The car even has A/C!! Can't wait to do the swap, paint job, suspension and wheels.

Did some body work on the silver crx (passenger rear fender). No progress as of yet for the swap.

In the meanwhile I got myself a non-running '86 Si. It had tranny problems, so I used the transmission I had from the DX motor. This is my daily until the other rex gets done. Replaced and spray painted a header panel I found after 3 pick-n-pull yard hunts!! I guess I got into the whole "save a first gen" thing after all wink.gif

Ok...so I know I'm a little late. A little 6 years late   but I finally got her out of the shop and have been driving her around since last Wednesday the 28th of December 2016! AND Loving every minute of it! Made it just in time for the new year :). Sorry for the delay. I decided to play with 20+ other cars since this project started (including 6 more first gen CRXs). Also, am daily driving a different type of "REX" lately ;):

Big things to follow this year. The engine and suspension stuff are taken care off. Bodywork/new wheels are next (contemplating on Houseman kit):

Hey, I know how the other car thing goes, I have 4 projects myself. Took my ZC car out for a spin yesterday myself after not driving it for a long bit and had a blast! It's like the engine wants to drag the car around  Thanks for the update!
