Besides the headlights going from recessed to flush, what major and minor design changes in the Rex from '85 to '86 and '86 to '87 are there to add over a hundred pounds? I figured safety equipment like heavier door beams for t-bone projection and bumper additions but maybe you guys might know.

There's more of a center console in the 1st gen mk2 than in the mk1. Can't imagine it adds much weight, though. Door panels are different, but they probably got lighter in the mk2, in my guess. -scott

There are a lot of very minor differences in the various versions of the Mk1 CRX that were sold in North America.
The 84-85 are pretty similar but the 86-87 got a few major changes. The weight increase in the 86-87 cars is due to heavier bumpers and headlights. The 86-87 Si also got heavier wheels and body cladding.
Significantly, Honda changed the electrical connectors in the 86 model year, so it is hard to swap electrical pieces between a 84-85 and a 86-87. Hard, not impossible.
The rear spoiler on the 86-87 Si weighs about 12 pounds. The evil weight demon on all Si's is the factory sunroof that adds about 50 pounds high on the body.

Rather than focusing on differences between years, there is more difference between modles. For Hf... Hybriding is hard but with Hasports kits dropping a b18c is a cinch...Oh btw to quote someone from way back when "BRING A BAG OF MONEY!"
DX is lighter than an Si, but its more potential with the right parts.
Most stuff is made for Si, so it is the easiest to work with.

And the HF is lighter than the DX!
If you love the Elise, drive a Se7en - Caterham or whatever...
It has even less content than the Elise, is less graceful looking

Yes the hf is like 300-400 pounds lighter, making the world a better place one pound at a time.

http://kumo.swcp.com.../crx/specs.html still doesn't accurately list the Final Drive ratio for the '85 Si, from what I and others have found (including the Factory Service Manual).
Don't forget the heavy dead pedal, not found in the '85 Si...
I doubt the later door pockets added much to the weight, since the '86-'87 HFs had the pockets, as well.

The 86-87 hf does not have the map pockets. It only has a small armrest/handle on a plain doorpanel

Front and rear bumper covers AND their metal counter parts weigh 3x's as much as the DX Si stuff.
My 85 Si had the lightest front bumper, the 86/87 was heavy as hell... the rear was a good bit heavier, removing the beams could helb, but would suck for a streetable car.
I believe the plastic was heavier also on the bumpers..
I woul dhave to check between my 85 Si doors and my 87 Si doors to see if ther is real significant differences, but I do know that 85 SI doors are heavy as fuck.

The carpet, dash, was also a diffrent shade of black between 8485 and8687
3rd brake light in 87
tail lights went darker in 86-87
front corner lights were a bit difrent from 8485-8687
The gray along the bottom of the early cars was a lighter color then 86-87 except the 85 si
Canadian 84 CRX was CVCC 85-87 DX was non CVCC (thank God)
also correct me if I'm wrong but 86-87 didn't have the holy shit handle.
One last thing the exhaust was diffent on a CDN 84 CRX then it was on the 85-87.

The worst thing about the added weight in the 86-87 cars is that it's at the very front and very back, which are about the worst places to add weight from a performance point of view. Another terrible spot would be the roof . . . ah, yes, they have heavy sunroof assemblies there too. Now we know why the performance edge is in the earlier, non-Si bodies. Look at what the most successful C Street Prepared CRXs are doing (non-Si body with Si drivetrain), and you'll find that it's not a coincidence.

Where did you get this figure? I'm not saying it's not true, but in a little car like the CRX, I can't imagine that much difference. I don't have figures of my own, but I thought the difference between the HF and Si was more like 200 pounds.
