I recently purchased my first Honda: 1986 CRX dx carbed automatic...about as basic as it gets. I got it because it runs good, was cheap, and not a total beater, or in the process of a prolonged project. It is 100% stock.

My goal is to have the ultimate daily driver. Superior fuel economy with nice zip...I am pretty attached to the 3 stage vtec for this. Of course that means a TON of work, but I am up for it.

I am currently still in the planning/acquisition phase. This has been slow due to university, both for time and money, but I would like to get some things going this summer. My goal for this summer is to nail down all possible variables/know exactly what I am dealing with. Also getting things along the way.

So far I have sourced the following:
P2J ecu ~50
fuel lines/pumps and wiring harness from a 91 crx si ~50
D15B 3stage engine ~800 shipped
M4VA multi matic trans ~150 +shipping

I havent bought anything yet, but am ready to once I am sure I wont start something I cant finish.

My questions are:
1) What do you think about my goals/choices
2) I assume the engine will bolt up being a d15? i doubt the trans?
3) Any tips/heads up stuff?

Thanks,
Patrick

if your doing a engine that is older then 1987 then NO its not a bolt in engine. THE ONLY bolt in D engines ARE D15A1 D15A3

if your after supieror fuel economy. sell the car an by a HF crx in stock form or by the HF engine an drop it in. other then that keep the car stock an that will be your best fuel saving setup.

for zip your best bet is to find and do a tranny swap to a 5 speed

my 1.5L 5speed in my 87 hatch im averging 32mpg city right now. its bone stock. carb an all.

Thanks for the input 3gencivic. I just came across the FAQ here about later d15s into 1 gens... huh.gif

From what I've been researching, the D15Z7 (aka jdm d15b vtec, but no one uses this designation) is the stuff, especially when coupled with the multi matic. I dont really want to go manual, its fun but I want more drivability, especially if I end up selling later on.

So Im looking at mounts, axles, hubs, linkage as well....?

your looking at custom mounts body frame bending/welding wireing new fuel lines pumps everything needed to run the engine, custom axles linkage.
then finding a auto tranny that will fit that engine your building.
