I once saw a program on Speed that was just that... a group of Nissan Sentra SE-R/NX2000 guys squaring off against a bunch of Honda Civic SI/CRX SI guys on a closed circuit track. Which ever group had higher average times would win. Also, some of these cars were highly modded and some were more or less stock within each group.
It was a good clean and close race.
On the curves, the Hondas pulled ahead (Nissans wouldn't handle as well due to their twist-beam rear axle). On the straight stretches, the Nissans pulled ahead (Nissans had 2.0L DOHC engines vs 1.6L to 1.8L for the Hondas, some of which were also SOHC).
I thought the Nissan guys would win because you could clearly see them pulling away on the straight stretches. The Nissan power advantage was obvious.
But in the end, the Honda guys won. The better rear suspensions more than made up for the power and the fact that the track in question gave an advantage with cars with better handling helped as well.
It was one of the most entertaining races I've ever watched.
After the race, the drivers all agreed that the Nissans would likely have won on a less handling-intensive track.
I wish I could remember what program it was.
I'd love to see a program that pits one group of enthusiasts of one type of car against a group enthusiasts of a competing car on a closed track. And to make it interesting, a certain number of cars in each group could be modded, with a monetary limit on how much you could spend on mods.
Some competitions I'd love to see would be:
-New Honda Civic vs Mazda 3, Nissan Sentra, Ford Focus, Toyota Corolla or even the Chevy Cobalt
-Ford Mustang vs Nissan 350Z, Honda S2000 or Pontiac GTO
And maybe for fun, have something like a Ferrari 308 or 328 (which can be bought for $40,000 to $60,000 in good condition) in the race and see how well it keeps up with designs that are 20 years newer.

Why do they always have to drag race? Can't they settle things with an autocross too? A timed track race? A rally?
Anything else!
