Alot of it will depending of course on how well you can shift the vehicle to begin with. I know people who shift better and quicker on a long throw than with a short throw....

I custom fabbed my Celica and Talon with a short shifter setup as they just don't make any worth buying. Makes it very nice when normal driving as you can basically shift with just your fingers. I haven't found any negative issues "engine performance" wise with fast shifting from using short shifters...but as stated above, the tranny may not be able to catch correctly from disengaging and engaging so quickly. Once in, you will have to play with it and see how far you can actually go before you start grinding than you know your limits. Now if turbo charged as some of you are, the short shifter is not to be considered a performance mod in the terms of "How fast can I shift this biotch!!!" You can do some turbo damage in the long run due to closing off the BOV way too early from getting back in it in gear and causing boost surges back at your turbo fins. For those that do not know this.... surging basically is when the pressure in the intercooler hose's is greater than the turbo output at that given time. The boost pressure is now trying to take the path of least resistance and since this path is not througha closed off BOV or Throttle Body, it tries going back through your turbo which in turns tries to literally stop the blades in there tracks. You will hear something like "choo, choo, choo, choo, choo" really fast coming from your air filter if this is happening. Now as long as you can build your boost back up quickly from the quick shift, so minimal surging is allowed, you should be fine...but again...not good for the turbo...let the blow off valve do its job and release most of the boost. I quick shift only when realllllly neccesary and usually can get back up to full boost with in seconds keeping the rpm's above 4k. But mostly use the short shifter setup for just lazy easy shifting.... I am sooo bored right now. lol

im not saying your destroying the gear, but the syncros, there is a set time the syncros are supos to engage at then mesh with the gears and you shift smoothly, when you speed up the shift times, you excede this window the syncros work in and you shift faster than they can handle and you start wearing them down faster

Yea...your gears are really not what you have to worry about... it is your synchros... EX: DSM's are notorious for the synchros not lasting on 2nd gear causing grinding ever so often. They are not that hard to replace if needed...just replace them when you start noticing the problems entailed and you can save the gears saving ya alot of $$$

Yes, I can see this as possible. And power shifting would just accentuate this...

But as long as you are not "alwayzzzzzz" fast hard shifting....you can prolong the synchros to just about normal lifetime wear.... again I state that I have found short shift kits to be very nice for normal shifting if anything.... you can shift with pretty much to moving your fingers and very minimal wrist or arm movement.

We have enough urgency with wrist pains from masturbating, no need to escalate the issue with shifting as well. hehehehehehe

in the 88-00 cars, they do improve throws, but most of the time you end up overshifting the tranny and killing your syncros and shift forks alot sooner than you would like to

ive never driven a car with a short throw that doesnt grind 3rd gear

that is kool tho i didnt think anybody made shifters for our cars

My car doesnt grind. But i didnt have it in there for too long untill i blew my engine. The feel of a short throw is so much better, but as you say, it wears out tranys quicker if your hard on them. I made a homemade one and i would be willing to make some more, as in machine some other ones.

if you look at the "brand name" short shifters like B&M they also offere differnt ones for different throw reductions, and thats probably wahts better than anything, a 20% reduction might be just what you need, say %30 wears the trans to fast, and %13 isnt worth the money

the problem probably is all the "ebay knock off shit" that might be anywhere from like 30-60% reduction

its not so much a problem i would susspect with the 84-87 cars, but i came from 88+ before i got my 3g, and theres so many random "bobs garage" shifters out there alot of the cars have horrible syncros from them

basically the synchronizer is designed to drag on the gear its mated to slowing the gear down and allowing for the synchro sleeve to engage. if you use a short shifter it COULD cause the synchro to grind because it is being jammed into gear quicker than the synchro can slow it down. the main reason its being jammed is due to added length on the bottom and shorter on top of the shifter creating a quicker shift. if your trans doesnt grind now then you probably wont even have this problem. but it will create a worse effect on an existing grind when using a ss. and yes i have a dc sports and i love it. smile.gif
