Sorry, I will rephrase the question. The actual VSS is always a reed switch. There just happens to be another unit on the top of the speedo frame. I have no idea what it does yet as I haven't had a look at the manuals to see if I can find a schematic for it. I will take some pictures tomorrow and post them so that you can see what I mean. It has a 3 pin plug and then it goes to the white box on the back of the cluster that has the blue connector.
What activates it is the thin brass plate in the cluster that has some segregations on it rather than a full circle. I want to find out if it has something to do with the speed indication as the brass plate is attached to the speedo needle. So it must turn something on as the speed increases and off when it decreases. Just a theory so far. Too late to do it tonight anymore. JS

This is a speedo from a carb car as it has the choke symbol in the dash cluster. This is the circuit board in place. You can see the white 3 pin connector on bottom right.
There is no VSS but it does have a blanking plate installed.
This is the first raised section on the brass plate that the optical sensor sits over.
As you turn the needle the graduations become lower.
A comparison of top and bottom of the circuit board.
Bottom view.
Side view to see the gap in the optical reader and the brand name on it.
If anyone knows what this little unit is supposed to do I would appreciate any information. I may be able to convert this unit to work as an external VSS. JS

Thanks guys. Sadly it has to be by trial and error as I know diddly about electronics! The one source that I do have charges $70/hr. He will be my last resort but he is good. JS
