I need the valve spring retainers for an Si. I really only need the exhaust spring retainers, but I'll do a whole set if you like. These are no longer available from Honda, so I need to find a used set.

Thanks,
Mike

blink.gif That was wierd...

Anyway, I have a few extra sets laying around. Do you have to run stock retainers? If not I have found some from a later Integra model that will work on our valves/springs, titanium too biggrin.gif .

If you love the Elise, drive a Se7en - Caterham or whatever...
It has even less content than the Elise, is less graceful looking
...and changes direction like a ping pong ball whacked by Thor.

Yep, have to be stock pieces. I wish they didn't; I have a set from my old E Prepared motor that are titanium as well.

And what was weird? That Honda discontinued them? Not only Honda, but the whole aftermarket. Honda has discontinued the lower gasket kit too (oil pan, timing cover, etc.). Flippin goofy . . .

If discontinued what is the ruling for aftermarket pieces. I always thought this restriction/rule was silly especially since I have heard that these retainers are prone to failures and that the weight difference on titanium retainers has to be in the milligrams. The performance advantage would have to be what 1/1000 horse power????

Isn't there some rule that if no stock part can be found then a reasonable replacement can be used? Almost any replacement part???

The rule about alternate parts in stock isn't 100% clear:

"Alternate components which are normally expendable and considered
replacement parts (e.g., engine and wheel bearings, seals, gaskets,
filters, belts, bolts, bulbs, batteries, brake rotors, clutch discs,
pressure plates, suspension bushings, drivetrain mounts, etc.) may
be used provided they are essentially identical to the standard parts
(e.g. have the same type, size, hardness, weight, material etc.), are
used in the same location, and provide no performance benefit. The
allowance for use of such replacements does not include camshafts,
differential covers, or ring-and-pinion sets, nor does it authorize the
use of piston rings having different configurations (e.g. “Total Seal”)
from those of the original.
Hardware items (nuts, bolts, etc.) may be replaced by similar items
of unrestricted origin. Safety wire, threadlocker compounds, and
locking nuts are permitted. These allowances are strictly to allow
components to be replaced from alternate sources other than the
63
original manufacturer. They should not be construed as an
allowance to replace components with those which could be
considered a ‘higher performance’ alternative. Parts available as
replacements through the dealers parts department, the factory, or
any other source which do not meet standard part specifications
(e.g., hardness, size, etc.) are not legal in Stock Category, except
as specifically provided elsewhere in these rules."

My read is that if Honda no longer offers them, you could have some made that are dimensionally the same, are steel, and have similar weight to the stock ones, or find some factory Honda ones from another car that are the same. You should take a look at the B-series motors- I think they are very similar. I would also recommend writing a letter to Doug Gill - SCCA's technical manager. He is the guy who answers questions like this, and he is also a long time 3rd gen Civic owner.

If you are turning the motor pretty fast, I would be replacing retainers at around 2 season intervals. If one fails, it can seriously F up a motor - just ask Scott H. (Hondaman)

Not sure if they are the same. Surely someone here would know. Anyone?

I was glad to see you out there. Too bad it rained. We'll be out at the Beechcraft lot next weekend. Come by and snag a few rides.

Not likely, seeing as it's an economy motor and really not intended to run at rpms as high as a DX (which has single springs). I just can't remember what my old one had in it.

I have some extra Si valve spring retainers. You only need exhaust? So 8 of the half retainers. You're running the double springs and the Si spring holder, correct?

PM me.
