Try the kakabox thread. Pretty sure there was a discussion on that. One of the serious racers was running a different set of shims each track as I recall the discussion..
I did try to bend the axle using 8 rods of stick welding along the top, and then grinding it off. Small effect.

225 50 15 is the widest I have managed to fit under the fenders front and back. I had to pump out the rear fenders, set the rear coilovers higher and run camber shims to achieve that fit (abt 550 lb springs). Front was running maximum camber with camber plates, crx knuckles and integra radius arms, but still had some contact with the front inner fender at lock. The struts had a little line of wear from the tyres so it was running close. Hope this helps.

Was your Si power steering? I ask as the gen 2 crx's with power steering develop a distinct wander when the centre of the rack wears as you describe. Gets dangerous in fact. Tightening the adjustment will remove the wander but in my experience the off centre steering is more difficult. I went to manual racks instead as the power steering is only needed at parking speeds.

Nice information. I can vouch for the hardness of that period honda axles. Had a set altered for a B swap and the shop that did it mentioned how much harder they were than a Hyundai they had in at the same time.
I went to the 84 civic FSM to see if there was any info on axle backlash. No mention at all. They say to check the splines for wear, and the inside ball race for wear. About what you say, in other words.
