I need to replace the left rear wheel cylinder on my '87 Si. An easy enough job, it should take a professional about 30 minutes. It should take me a couple of hours.
But before I turn the first wrench, I need the part. A loyal Honda guy, I checked with my local dealer (Honda of Santa Monica) for the part. Usually they have a good supply of old Honda parts on hand and their prices are fair.
The counter guy said, "$50 and wait for us to order it."
Majestic Honda has the part listed for $28, plus shipping. And I would have to wait for ti to ship from Honda to Majestic and then from Majestic to me.
So I dropped by my local Pep Boys {side note- I would NEVER allow Pep Boys touch my car. They are notorious for lousy work and gouging tactics. My local Pep Boys service are was shut down for three days by the State of California for illegal practices}
Pep Boys had the part in stock and the price.... $17.
It does pay to shop around.

nice, but every one knows that any honda dealer is going to be way more pricy than a chain parts shop. any way good for you.

Yeah, I am so cheap I usually call about a hundred places before I buy. And I do research on what I'm buying, (who makes it, warranty, quality, first hand experience...etc.). There are certain things I will only get from Honda or Acura. I just purchased a head gasket for my car. The local Acura dealer wanted $86.00 prepaid and 3-4 days. Another wanted $75.00 and 1-2 days. The last wouldn't even take me seriously saying they needed a VIN# and weren't even sure they could get something that old ( The blow off?). I found a genuine Acura headgasket online at Acura of Bellevue, in Bellevue Washington for $38.00 plus like $11.00 S&H. Yes it does pay to shop around. Free market competition works sometimes.

FYI - Wheel cylinder from Kragen Autoparts is $14.99 (Raybestos pt#: 2037581).. (In stock near me in both Alhambra and East LA) For small parts/disposables like this I check out Parts America/Kragen before I go tot the store and then call to see if the part is in stock...
As a matter of fact, I am going to rebuild both of my wheel cylinders tomorrow because the right rear one started to leak and I only do them in pairs.. Rebuild kits are like $6 for just the seals and I find them easy to do..

Yeah that is a bit high... That's about US$1.55 as of right now.
The soda (yes it's soda, dangit) machine here at work is US$0.55.

A can is .85 at most places (Costco is like .50), but the larger bottles (591ml?) are $1.50.
