someone is trying to sell me a bare d16a1 port and polished head for about $250. it still has its valve guides in there, but other than that, completely bare. if i buy this, would it be ok for me to use the cam caps that i have on my motor now, or is it risky? cam caps are very important i know, so if i put my used ones on this head i don't want anything to break....

should i get this, or not? he doesn't have any of the stuff left because he said that the head has been sitting in a case for about 7 years.

also, he doesn't know what year this is from..so if it turns out to be an 86-87 head, will i be able to fit my 88-89 distributor and crank sensor onto it?

ill see if he can find out for sure.

There's a thread somewhere here about fitting a 88-89 distributor to an 86-87 head.

You should be able to use any A1 cam caps - just plastigauge to verify the clearances are within spec. Any machine shop should be able to line hone the bores if they are out (which is unlikely).

$250 is a decent deal if the port job didn't ruin the head. Post good pictures of the ports here, there are a few members that know what they are looking at.

Dang...then I don't think that you are going to be able to tell musch about the porting job - you need really clear, really detailed pictures of the ports.

Why do you want to buy that head? Is there something wrong with yours?
If you ask me it's too much money for a stripped head w/ no cam caps, valves or springs. Even if you buy this head and use your own parts, you stil have to pay to have the caps line honed and the valve seats/faces recut. To run a 88-89 dizzy on an 86-87 head, you have to use the dizzy end cam cap off of an 88-89 head, and then it is only going to hold it w/ one bolt.
I think for the money you are looking at to use this head you could just re-work yours. I ported my head myself and it looks just like that one, and had the head re-worked for $200.

here is what the guy said about the head:
-PRESSURE TESTED GOOD

-FRESHLY PORTED AND POLISHED

-FRESH HIGH PERFORMANCE 3 ANGLE VALVE JOB W/ TOP RELIEF CUT

-FRESHLY RESURFACED

-VALVE GUIDES ARE IN GOOD CONDITION

-BARE HEAD!!!!! DOES NOT COME WITH VALVES, SPRINGS, RETAINERS, KEEPERS, SPRING SHIMS, VALVE STEM SEALS, CAMS, ROCKERS, OR CAM CAPS!!!!!!!!! (SEE PICTURES)

id like to port my own head, but i don't want to mess anything up. the reason i wanted to buy this was because the work was already done. im looking to either port and polish my head, or get an already p&p'd head.

i bought reground turbo cams, have a bored out intake manifold, a bigger TB, TB spacer (for a "bigger plenum effect") and a turbo on my car. i have 2 heads..
- one was on my car and when i spun a bearing, metal bearing chunks got circulated through my motor/head.
- i bought a second motor from someone, and i can use the head. i want to get the valve seals replaced anyways. seeing that i have to strip the head anyways, i might as well put the new valve seals in the p&p head, and then put all of my other heads internals into there.

is this a dumb idea?

also, i was looking up how to install the distributor..and its not that hard. like it was stated above, all i have to do is put the 88-89 cam cap on. it will attach with one bolt.

i guess its just better that i send my own head out to get p&p'd. i just have to find a place that won't charge me an arm and a leg... all i want is a basic port/polish job (maybe gasket match size), new valve seals, and everything cleaned up (combustion chamber, etc). who knows..depending on the price, i might want it all done up!!
