In Topic: Fuel Starvation Issue

02 December 2008 - 11:23 PM

Hey Dan; Bret Norgaard here. I'm more than a bit late to this party unfortunately.

After chasing fuel starvation issues in my car for a couple years and experiencing the same issues in the Kuhn's car and others, the only solution for the problem within the confines of the Street Prepared rule set was to run no less than 3/4 tank of gas (HF/DX tank). Some have told me their cars "don't starve" but when I drove them the problem, however sometimes subtle, was very much there. I tried most every legal combination of parts from fuel pumps to fuel lines, large in-line fuel filters, etc. The more grip I found the worse the problem became. I literally missed out on several big wins at National Tours and Pro Solo's by hundredths of a second due to fuel starve coming out of steady state corners. I would go into events thinking I had the problem solved after trying various changes. Matter of fact, an example of this is audibly and graphically shown in one of several Youtube videos I posted some time ago (run 5, San Diego Nat. Tour). The car starves just as I pass the first slalom cone heading towards the final few turns to the finish. I had to lift briefly to get it to prime up again in an otherwise flat out slalom for that car. Once the gas level was maintained religiously, the starve was gone. Adding a swirl pot/fuel de-embolizing canister, etc is not legal in Street Prepared (somehow Tom Ellam escaped this rule infraction at the 1998 Nationals, but...) nor is modifying any aspect of the fuel tank or contents there in. So, keep the tank at 3/4 and have fun! A little extra weight beats sloshing fuel and moments of no acceleration that feel like an eternity.

Hope all is well and give me a shout some time,

Bret
