Ok, for about 2 weeks, my RPM needle slowly started to bounce, now to the point where the needle doesn't work, except for a few spikes now and then. I took the cluster out, and cleaned up the connectors. They were firm, and everything else is working, just not the RPM needle.
Anybody have any suggestions? Stock 86 Si wiring in a DX with a B16A JDM VTEC happiness.

Bad ignitor in the distributor, maybe?

That is the thing. I doubt distributor because the car runs fine. Hit VTEC fine. We figured if it was the distributor, the car would run funny, or not hit VTEC.

bad cable?? or where it connects to the trans. Play with it a little and see if it works. Mine backed off a little there and the tach wouldnt work and it bounced like yours.just verify its connected all the way and go from there.

You are thinking of the spedo cable. My spedometer works fine. It is the RPM guage that isn't working correctly.

it could be the ignitor pack bouncing tach usually means ignitor also check main relay have you tried a dif cluster?

My tach does the same thing. Well, it doesn't do anything but twitch if you hit the gas hard. I replaced the igniter and then cleaned the crap out of all my electrical connections just for the heck of it and no luck. Maybe your needle is broken?

Could be the Throttle Position Sensor is shot. Just a thought.

Well, if it was the TPS, the car wouldn't hit VTEC. The RPM was running a bit high for a while. Does anybody know if there is a voltage difference between a 86 Si cluster, and a JDM Ecu?
I would try a different RPM guage, but I don't have a spare.

Well, cleaned connections to the distributor (which is brand new) and tps, and a few others. Cleaned the connections to the cluster. Nothing.
Actually, now the needle doesn't work at all. I think I just have a dead guage. See if I can find a matching cluster somewhere.
