QUOTE (Alchemist Dragon @ Oct 10 2005, 12:54 PM)
I changed the igniter and it started for a brief second then died once again...
Think the main relay should be next?  It doesn't sound like the fuel pump is working current so would a short in the main relay cause the problem?

I live in Pulaski VA which is about three hours drive from Ashville and also have a 3G Civic SI which is cutting out at odd times. Mine seems to be an idling problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Also, I would be glad to switch out parts between our cars to see if you can figure out what is wrong with both vehicles. I suspect that I may have either a clogged fuel filter, a faulty throttle possition sensor or something clogging the throttle body.

I have an 87 hatch. It would turn over, but would not start. I tested the fuel pump by using a pressure meter on the fuel filter to see if the correct psi of pressure was there..i think its between 36 and 41 psi, that means that ur fuel pump is working. I then took in the ignition coil, and had it tested. I would suggest testing out ur fuel pump b4 going out and blowing money on it and ur ignition coil. It could be going bad.

Sounds like your main relay...I'm fighting that with my car now. My car runs fine normally, but sometimes when I go the crank the engine, the PGM-FI light in the instrument cluster does not light, meaning that the fuel pump has not pumped to pressure and closed the relay for current to the starter (generally). I've found that if you "pluck" the main relay, 9 times out of 10, you will get the PGM-FI light to light, pressure from the pump and a closed circuit for engine ignition. A low battery voltage makes this even a worse problem with mine. Thing is, I've NEVER had my car cut out on me after it has started. I did have that happen on a '90 Civic...turned out it was a bad/intermittent ignition switch (cracked housing if I remember right). Try tapping on the relay when it gives you problems...that may give you some cheap feedback. Good luck.
