Both of my steering rack boots were torn so today I decided to replace them while installing new tie rod end and my Energy Suspension bushing kit. The boots were pretty ripped up so I just started pulling on the passenger side boot to get it off. I got most of it off but when I looked there was still what looked like the end of a boot. Once I had it off it appeared to actually be a bushing of some type. I had no idea where it went so I took the drivers side apart carefully hoping there would be a similar bushing for me to reference. Low and behold the drivers side only has a boot and no bushing. After turning the wheel to the right completely and looking at the passenger side of the rack there does appear to be a similar size gap on the shaft but I would like a little confirmation please. Does anybody know where on the rack this should be?

The bushing piece is in the middle

according to the microfiche, I can't see where it would go. do you think it had been messed with by a previous owner, and someone thought it went on that rack, but actually didn't? sorry I'm no more help.

I agree with oldschoolimport, I just took my steering rack apart to inspect it for wear, and the bellows on both side had nothing like that inside.

I recently replaced my extremely worn out passenger side inner tie rod end and found the exact bushing you're wondering about on the steering rack... it slides over the steering shaft coming directly out of the rack for a surface for the large end of the boot to seal against if that makes any sense. You'd think they'd just make the end of the boot that size but no. It is actually mounted inside the large end of that boot on the rack and that is why nobody else here seems to be able to see it!

BTW, I'm parting out my '87 DX hatchback ... blew the head gasket. If anybody needs something from it just PM me! The parts are nice and so is my price!
