Crisco isn't too bad either, as long as you keep it hot.

So should I not be using a 5w20 synthetic blend on an engine with 197k miles on it? I still do the 3000 mile oil changes though (sometimes its 3500).

We did find that a racing synthetic, Royal Purple 10W30 at $8.00 a bottle was not enough protection for the cam/rockers in my 1986 Honda Civic DX for road racing use. Every mile is a hard mile. Lots of revs, shifting, etc.

I am working with a motor builder who has lots of experience and hours and hours of dyno time. I believe his thoery about the synthetics and this 80's technology motor. I will run only Castrol, Mobile One or Valvoline dino oil from now on in the race car. The new engine has only seen Castrol GTX becasue it still carries the old ratings and the new. No more synthetics for me in an 80's Honda.
My driving skills fall somewhere between The Stig and Sammy Hawkins!

When you conform to the norm you sink into obscurity.

yeah all my family uses now adays is castrol and valvoline... Castrol synthetic for my car. Never had an engine blow up yet. Speaking of high milage cars, my friend had an old Rabbit GTi that had over 640,000 miles on it. But it was already on its 3rd engine. The car finally died when the welds started coming apart on the chassis around the suspention area...
