Long time since I've posted!

As some of you know, I have an 86 CRX with a moderately built (a little bit of everything done) B18C1 in it. The basics of the setup are-

12:1 compression, big cams, ported
Tri-y style header (2 1/2" collector)
NO catalytic converter
Vibrant resonator (about 8 inches after the collector)
Thrush turbo style muffler
2 1/2" piping all the way through.

I am having an extremely hard time finding a nice sounding muffler. I have had 3 different ones on since I got this engine into the car, and every one of them has had some awful rasp at one RPM or another. I understand that with a system that is this unrestricted, there are going to be some draw backs, but someone has had to have found a nice setup by now. Any suggestions? Experience?

The Thrush muffler I have on it now is by far the most restrictive, and it probably sounds the worst. It got rid of some of the deep rumble, but it still sounds like someone yelling through a tube.

Sounds like you just need a bigger resonator, usually that deepens the tone and cuts down on the rasp. Also its somewhat determined by the thickness and size pipe, to big of a pipe with to thin of walls will create a hellified low end rasp, because the exhaust pulses loose velocity in a larger pipe, and back up on each other so to speak causing more resonance. Mild steel is usually thicker than SS for most exhaust apps, so SS is usually a little more raspy.

Try the Supertrapp tune able muffler. I am running one on my blacktop with 2 3/4 into an empty cat glass packs and the Supertrapp. It doesnt have the rasp that most mufflers have. Add plates to louden it up and reduce back pressure or remove plates to quiet it and add back pressure.

Mine sounds amazing, a little loud but amazing. 2.5" with header, 12:1 d16a1, 24" bottle and vibrant muffler, 4" tip.

"turbo" mufflers sound like absolute shit on b-series imo, I had the dynamax superturbo before I got the glasspack.

I have a tri-y with 2.5 collector, then stepped to 2.25 with cat, resonator and muffler on my B20Z. Sounds like this:

At idle it is quiet with a hint of a deep note to it.

Personally I've always loved the sound of Thermal R&D mufflers. I have one on my CRVtec with a Moroso Spiral Flow being used as a resonator. No audio though, sorry.

Bigger resonator as in length, width? I'm not sure I can physically fit a bigger one in without it hitting the shift linkage. I believe the one I have is already 18"x2.5". I thought about running two, but I don't think I have room anywhere else either.

From what I've heard, the catalytic converter makes the biggest difference as far as rasp. But seeing as how I'm looking for performance, and I'm not required to pass emissions anymore so I just can't bring myself to put one in!
