someones already done a something like that.. kind of i think. i dunno. member by the name of JDN has the car i think..
anyways, i don't see how ANYONE can be getting less than 20mpg unless they are at a track. when i drive my civic HARD in the mountains (only time i take it out) i STILL get around 30mpg. it's hard for me to get anything less! if you people are getting 12mpg, that's horrible! my 87 F150 with a big inline six towing a 4000lb trailer gets 10mpg! NO WAY can you be close to that thing. i don't believe you unless there is something SERIOUSLY wrong.

I dunno... I'd like to swap something in that's not really been done before, like the Shogun. It's a Ford Festiva with a mid-mounted Taurus SHO Yamaha motor. something like that would be awesome
yeah the dohc v8's are pretty nasty... they came with manual tranny's right? either way it's not doable unless you are incredibly committed and have a LOT of resources.
my plan is to go for a subaru engine, welded center diff, and go rwd. Its the easiest possible rwd swap imo. the subaru tranny's are small and narrow, the engine would easily fit in all dimensions- mainly you'd only need modify the front cross member, maybe modify the firewall and floor pans a little, and extend the swing arms in the rear to accept a rear end from something like an Isuzu truck/suv v6(because it comes with LSD) or another solid rear axle, rwd, narrow vehicle.
He who dies with the most toys, wins.
