It is confusing, all this 1st Gen engine stuff. Maybe I can help straighten this out for you. ALL 1984-1987 CRXs use similar engine blocks and transmission cases. But what is in the engine blocks and transmission cases are very different depending upon the year and model.
For this discussion let's add up all the different engines-
1984: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.3 carb'ed (HF)
1985: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.3 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)
1986: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.5 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)
1987: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.5 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)
1986 was a year of change for Honda. They gave the 1st Gen a very subtle interior change, gave the Si its own body cladding, made the bumpers heavier, increased the displacement of the HF engine and changed all the electrical connectors. But most significantly of all, they changed the NAME on all their engines. So you will find identical parts with two different names on them.
I have never tried this but I would guess that the killer combination for a 1.5 1st Gen would be: A 86-87 HF bottom end with lighter, higher compression pistons and its lighter flywheel with the better flowing head of a Si.

Good summary Scott, except the '85 HFs were 1.5s. The 1.3s only came in '84 model CRXs (called the 1.3). 1.3 engines also came in the 4-speed (base) model of Civc. I believe all the rest were 1.5s.

DSK 86CRX, try majestic Honda, Link, they have them listed for $43.50 for the #1 & 3 cyl. and $41.37 for the #2 & 4 cyl.
I have no idea why the price is different like that because they list the 0.25mm overbore replacements for $41.37 for all of them, #1 - 4. Strange, but not so uncommon for Honda stuff.

If you love the Elise, drive a Se7en - Caterham or whatever...
It has even less content than the Elise, is less graceful looking
...and changes direction like a ping pong ball whacked by Thor.
