hey, i've been to the junkyard about three times, taken apart about three crx's just like mine, and when i get them apart the piston is different. i have an 86 hf and the part for the crank and the pin the conects the piston to to rod aren't the same size. can someone please help me. it seems as if the piston i have is the only one like that because all the rest are the same. on my piston it say pe1 and then hf1. on the others it says peiy hf2. can someone please help me to find the on like i have. if i cant find one my next option is to just get a new block. so my next question is what blocks can i get that will bolt to the transmission from my hf? please someone help me. thank you for any of your time.

The HF's have completeley different pistons, pins, rods, and crankshafts than the DX or Si models. They are made MUCH lighter in weight and strength. You need to remember that these weren't made for horespower, they were made to be as economical as possible. By making them as light as they did it was easier for the engine to accelerate without using as much fuel.

FWIW, the HF piston pins are 0.677" in diameter as opposed to the 0.748" in all the others.

As for which engine will bolt up to your transmission. Any of them from 1984-1987 as long as it's not from the AWD wagon will work.

If you love the Elise, drive a Se7en - Caterham or whatever...
It has even less content than the Elise, is less graceful looking
...and changes direction like a ping pong ball whacked by Thor.

I've got 4 pistons, rods, and the crank from an 87 HF if you want em... I can take measurements to see if they're the same as what you're looking for if you want....

It is confusing, all this 1st Gen engine stuff. Maybe I can help straighten this out for you. ALL 1984-1987 CRXs use similar engine blocks and transmission cases. But what is in the engine blocks and transmission cases are very different depending upon the year and model.

For this discussion let's add up all the different engines-
1984: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.3 carb'ed (HF)
1985: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.3 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)
1986: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.5 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)
1987: 1.5 carb'ed, 1.5 carb'ed (HF), 1.5 injected (Si)

1986 was a year of change for Honda. They gave the 1st Gen a very subtle interior change, gave the Si its own body cladding, made the bumpers heavier, increased the displacement of the HF engine and changed all the electrical connectors. But most significantly of all, they changed the NAME on all their engines. So you will find identical parts with two different names on them.

I have never tried this but I would guess that the killer combination for a 1.5 1st Gen would be: A 86-87 HF bottom end with lighter, higher compression pistons and its lighter flywheel with the better flowing head of a Si.

Scott, I have wondered this very thing myself for some time. It's the only reason I have that HF block in the garage. I have yet to assemble one to try yet because I'm a little leery of those HF rods. Have you seen one next to a stock Si rod? They are mighty puny looking.

Still thinking about trying it at some point though. Just need to find a head that is dispensable. Just in case wink.gif .
