K, so I had to go pick up my girl 2.5 hours away at the airport so I gassed the Rex up and drove.....and drove....and drove......279 miles later we were back home and I wondered how many miles the '85 Si got on the way. It only took 6.484 gallons to filler back up...so that's roughly 43 mpg! I usually get 34-36 mpg on average but doin 70+ mph almost all the way, plus a lil gridlocked traffic and the added weight of 125lb girl and 100 lb of luggage on the return trip. THAT'S why I bought a Honda. Just thought I would share.

are you sure you zeroed your odometer before your trip? I've never heard of anyone getting that kind of mpg(43) out of a civic.

That doesn't sound too off, my 86 Si with 188000 miles routinely gets 38 mpg...and i love it

I get 35 or better, and thats with a small fuel leak. (87 Si - City driving)

39 here hwy. no spoiler or plastic under the car which cuts down.
The timing is also by accident slightly advanced.
I bet these cars could go over 40 easy if you didn't have AC.

I'm not sure what my city mileage is right now. A lot lower.
30 maybe. But I've really been gettin on it going by the
SUVs going put put to save a nickel of gas given em the
finger and zoom zoom.

the only place the weight was affecting your gas mileage was in the gridlocked traffic. at constant speed on the highway weight has no effect on gas mileage.

I got 40 mpg at 75-80 mph on the hwy, no ac. It supprised me but I checked it twice on a 500 + mile trip. Miss the ac sometimes but I don't miss the weight.

My commuting mileage lately has all been above 43...best 45.8, worst 43.7 (that was yeaterdays fill up) with the HYDRA motor.

well other than the weight lowering the car and helping with aerodynamics

Kirk, just curious, but which fifth gear are you running in that tranny. Did you change to the HF gear yet?
I'll bet you aren't running that good final drive ratio yet either

That's still some great mileage regardless.

Wow, I'm suprised at the numbers you guys are getting
I average 28-29mpg in the '86 Civic Si hatchie---stock except for ractive muffler.

bryman<---noticed the factory window sticker says "30 city, 33 hwy" for the Si..

original brochure lists epa estimated milage for the Si as 30/32.

I would have to check later on the original window sticker,
but 30/32 or 30/33 should be correct.

So basically, we all get well above.

What's funny - I've seen 2 news articles now showing how
people are mad when they buy their car and the milage
is waaay lower, like 30%. One of the articles and this
might have been 60 minutes this guy bought a hybrid
that is barely getting 30 mpg. They referred to it as
'respectable but not on the sticker'.

I wonder what has changed on the way EPA does the official
milage, other than some type of payoff somewhere to make
these cars rate better than they really do.

BTW, the guy that spent what, $24k on that hybrid,
HIS WIFE WAS PISSED

I also read on the mini reviews this guy was getting
48 hwy in a miniS, and the epa doesn't rate it anywhere near that.

I'd be interested to know if I put that header on, and the free
flow air filter can I eek out some more mpg as long as I'm not
getting down on it.

Straight bone stock Si transmission with 185/60/14 tires - electronic advance and tuning are wonderful things...

I got my emissions done the other day - everything was less than 1/3 of the allowable limit, and I still get to rev to 7500 RPM!

definately my cat is bad. But with one more year to go who cares.

That's what I forgot! I originally had 185s, I had to get 195s
last time. My mileage went way down, maybe 4 mpg.

I'm thinking when I get tires again with 185s I should get
low 40s hwy.

Add the header and CAI....
