I got an OEM Honda tape deck for my kid's '85 Hatch to replace the pos aftermarket am/fm deck that was in there. It looks like this:

The wiring harness under the dash has 10 wires:

The wires are as follows:
blue/yellow stripe w/red dots
blue/green stripe w/red dots
yellow/red stripe w/red dots
red/green stripe w/blue dots
red/yellow stripe w/blue dots
brown/white stripe w/blue dots
brown/black stripe w/blue dots
white/blue stripe w/red dots
grey/black stripe w/red dots
grey/white stripe w/red dots

All but one of these wires matches the harness I got from the pick and pull today. There are also 2 seperate wires under there: a red one and a black with dbl. red dots.

Wire harness I got from the pick and pull that plugs in the back of the deck. It's has 16 wires:

All but 2 of these match up with the under dash wire harness:

white/yellow strip w/red dots
red/black stripe w/blue dots

Wires in this color have no mate.

I assume I can match up like colors, but am not sure of the ones without mates. And what is that HUGE plug on the back of the deck for?

I'm not much of a wiring guru, and actually don't have a HU in my car because my harness was cut out and I can't figure it out, but the big plug is, most likely, for your antenna.

The radio you have looks like it came from an 86 or newer. Buy the adapter from here:
http://cgi.ebay.com/...Q2em118Q2el1247
and splice together to make an adapter

No time, this needs to be done quickly. Not sure what year the radio is from, but "most" of the wires match the harness from the jy.

some times you have an extra wire for the antenna motor on newer HUs
i dont think you have to worry about that, just throwing it out there for others because i always forget it
Oh, you don't know if it's legal?
you're in california of coarse it's ILLEGAL!!!!!

I'm pretty sure that's for the optional equalizer, and the antenna is the one on the other side of the deck.

If it is 8-pin, you will need the 6-pin "turn-around plug". Otherwise, the radio will be rather quiet (I think).

I can throw one in the mail to you. I have a couple.

Keith, who could bring an equalizer for you next week...

I've never messed with the radio in the 84-85, were there any digital tuners for the 84-85 or was that option added in 86, possible with an upgrade to the radio harnes to support memory? Maybe that the 10 pin in the 85 has no memory wire if it was designed to work with the push/pull tuning buttons. That new head unit looks to be the high end 86-87 option, think it was $400+. The big dangling round plug should be for the EQ, it looks like it may have the "shorting" cap still installed on it so that it should function properly without the EQ installed.

My first guess is that you may have to run a new wire for memory since the plug in the car only had 10 pins (+12V, GND, 4x speaker -, 4x speaker +). I'll have to research that later, not gonna try right now in my current mind.

he has a constant 12 volt and an ignition 12 volt in the harness and then an added black wire thats grounded outside of the harness so my guess is that there was originally a ground strap on the back of the radio's possibly and some previous owner added the black for ground. the added red wire looks like it might have been a remote wire for an amp or maybe the EQ that was in the car when he got it
