I think the pump he's talking about is the bosch motorsport 044 pump. Pretty popular with the Audi/VW/Porsche guys.

Mk 1 VW pumps, the same they use on the E30 BMW's Bosch part# 0 580 254 951 & 171 906 091 A & 0 580 254 001 & 0 580 254 967 the Airtex cross reference number is E8169
The way the Germans solved the noise problem, was to put the pump in a high density foam cradle, then set that in a bracket. On these german cars, it becomes indistinguishable from all the road noise, even harder to test, seeing that you only hear it click on, and this is how I became aflame and ran around smacking myself to put myself out.

Yeah, I remember that foam insulating cradle. I've used a bosch pump to drain fuel tanks in the suburbans that come into my shop weekly. They've never made as much noise as this freakin' carter! And that was completely exposed and out of a car!
