Back when I had my 87 Si I recall an importer of mine that had a browntop ZC with what looked like a SOHC tranny mounted to it.....how I could tell was by the SOHC axles that were plugged into the tranny.

I just wanted to confirm if an 84-87 SOHC tranny + clutch + flywheel is truly compatible with a D16A1/ZC engine .. or not?

I'm getting mixed answers from the d-series.org forum and I think its because no one has really tried it. I thought I'd ask you fella's next.

thanks =)

The '85-'87 4WD Wagon tranny will bolt up fine.

There is also a seemingly very rare brown top carbed ZC that accepts the stock 84-87 tranny. The red one that was sold on here recently in Burlington has it, and I've seen it with my own eyes.

Right - the SOHC tranny will not bolt up to a D16A1/ZC unless it came from a 4x4 wagon.

Now...the 88-95 SOHC tranny (L3, S20[?]) will bolt up to a D16A1/ZC with a tiny bit of work. I experimented one afternoon...

Now my question would be, does it work?? I would wonder how the starter would fit and if it would work.. Also what flywheel would be used?? It may just bolt up but will it work?? smile.gif
RIP Block# D16A12011451.. It will be missed..

I believe this is the same type of carbed ZC as the one I saw (in the past). Which is making me ask this question in general...

thanks for the replies ya'll.

I was talkin to gtpilot before i posted this question up and he was able to fit a SOHC tranny onto a D16A1/ZC engine with some semi-heavy modification. He had this to say:

"The ears are relatively close, but don't match up. We did take an Integra tranny, cut the ears off and then welded them back on in the right location to make it work.

OR, go get a 4WD wagon block for a 1st gen - it will match up with the D16A1 trannies..."

TJ...
In a bizzaro way, I kinda tried your tranny fitment but in a reverse fashion when I had my 87. I tried putting a complete 89 ZC longblock w/CG tranny in. It mostly worked, but I was only able to fit 2 bolts per motor mount (usually 3) and 1 bolt for the half shaft (usually 3 too, as you know). I felt uneasy about how there was only 2 bolts per mount holding the motor in and not mention I had clutch engagement problems (I don't think I used the complete CG clutch/flywheel setup....which I should've)...and wound up taking the swap out a week later =(
This experimenting performed during my virgin hybriding years.lol. Wish I THOUGHT of using the CG flywheel at the time!!!! mad.gif

good reference pics btw!
