I have an issue I was wondering if you might be able to help me out on—My mechanic has rebuilt the carburetor but is having some trouble fine tuning the idle.

On initial start up the engine RPM’s  is around 2500. After about 2-3 minutes it calms down. When you put the car  into gear the engine dies, if you do not feather the pedal. I feel it should hold an idle around 800-850 until you engage the clutch. It just does not want to “catch” around  800 to 850 RPM.  It sits there and “shutters” for a couple of seconds then dies.

If you take the car out  to the store, when you come out of the store the same situation occurs.

Do you have experience with these Honda carburetors from  1984 to 86?

I would like my mechanic to talk with you directly if you have any ideas on this subject. Either way , I would like to hear from you

If you could just give me this information I can probably better help you:

1.  Auto or manual gearbox?

2.  Auto or manual choke?

3.  Is it a 2 barrel keihin carb?

You say - "I feel it should hold an idle around 800-850 until you engage the clutch."  However, in a manual car with a clutch that is working properly there should be no difference in engine rpm with the clutch in or out and the car in neutral.

And when you say "When you put the car  into gear the engine dies" If it is a manual and your foot is pressing the clutch pedal and you move the shifter into first gear and the engine dies its your clutch that is the problem.

When i had an idling problem with mine I could not get it to idle lower than 1200. It turned out that the electronic solenoid held into the back which operates the idle circuit was stuck open and pretty much flooding the engine at idle.
