As for the starter, yea I replaced my front mount and had to remove those bolts to get to it. Once youve done it its easy haha, its just a pain to get the 8'' bolts to thread back in right since they have to go through the starter, tranny, and into the mount bracket at just the right angle lol.

The starter fiasco is far too long to get into here, but to make a VERY long story short. I have managed to refine my skills and have a starter installation down to a meager 18minutes with no hoist or air tools!!

Meaning, I have had the starter in and out so many times trying to track down an intermittent problem that I can challenge even the most seasoned VW tech at a starter swap!

And for the record.....the frikin VW exhaust crapped out this morning, even with a nearly open exhaust that 2.0L DOESN'T sound powerful!

Sorry Just venting..............

my 24 year old origional exhaust has a few small holes in it. Check TTTuning if your gonna get it replaced. I got my 2'' cat back system from them for 175. Thats cheaper than going OEM and its a direct replacement with the only difference under WOT.

I have to admit....I HATE working on my wifes Vdub.  Though it is a 96 Jetta 2.0L 8 valve.

Here's why, Everything is more complicated than it first looks.

Had to change the starter.....the bolts that hold the starter on also hold the front engine mount on!!!  DUMB!  And that's coming from an automotive engineer's (me) viewpoint.

Had to change the coil....no problem right, a few plugs and 2 scews.....ofcourse not!  The 2 screws thread into nuts on the other side of the fire wall, the nuts are not captive or weld nuts.  If you can get the screws out, the nuts fall into the unknown under the leaf screen.  How do you take the leaf screen off, start by taking off the wipers!  GEEZ a 10 minute job just turned into and hour!!  (In the dark in sub zero temps too)

Had electrical gremlins too!

AND the transmission (auto) is going to!

The CRX, mostly everyhting has at least been thought about in terms of servicing it!

Also, I find certain aspects of the Jetta flimsy in construction, thinking particularly about the front suspension and subframe, not near as robust as the CRX and the car weighs 1000lbs more

Anyway, being objective, both cars (MK1 and Gen1) suit what they were initialy were designed to do.  I would have to admit, from a purely engineering standpoint I prefer the Honda, just seems more stout in the areas that really need it (suspension, brakes).  Though the body of the Vdub does seem more substantial.  But bear in mind, the CRX was designed using Civic underpinnings to be a Sporty car where the GTI was just a rabbit with bolt-ons and a different motor.  Perhaps it would be more appropriate to compate a CRX with a Scirocco (or however the hell you spell it), Rabbit underpinnings, new body?  Does that make sense?

yep smile.gif But the scirocco 1s were VERY underpowered. The only substantially powered rocco was the second gen 16v's, 142 HP, all wheel disk brakes, factory installed lower stress bar, 22mm MC, stiffer suspension, etc. The size difference is immense between the two though, The CRX was just designed so much better to utilize the little space it has that they almost seem to even out in interior room despite the roccos rear seats and hatch area.

As for the starter, yea I replaced my front mount and had to remove those bolts to get to it. Once youve done it its easy haha, its just a pain to get the 8'' bolts to thread back in right since they have to go through the starter, tranny, and into the mount bracket at just the right angle lol.
And Auto trannys are something VW will NEVER win any praise for laugh.gif

cool dogs, how old is your beagle? I have one that just turned a year old.

I know you werent talking to me, but abby is a beagle mutt wink.gif
Abby was picked up from Fairfax County Animal Shelter almost 2 years ago, she is going on 3. Her previous owners inherited her from the death of a family member and just put her outside until someone called and AC picked her up. She is THE BEST dog I have ever seen, she has such a personality! ALWAYS wants to know whats going on with people, has to make sure everyones 100% happy and if theyre not she'll bug you and follow you around until you are. Shes VERY smart also and always seems to know whats going on in that little head of hers.

Owin on the other hand, hes a crazy little man.
I got him from under a house in NC after the owners adopted a dog and it had puppies they did not want. He is 85 lbs and half lab, half pit. He is fairly ADD like most labs lol but its extremely playful and loving. Hes protective against confrontations towards those he knows but other than that is the nicest sweetest big dog ever smile.gif Hes almost 2 years old.
