Damnit!

agreziv86E-AS's Photo agreziv86E-AS 03 Dec 2003

well theres barely any "good" oil filters left for our cars...now honda pulls a fast one....i normally get the genuine honda oil filters from the dealer each oil change.... and this time they give me one that looks like one for the newer honda models (much thinner than the old wide ones)...so whatever, i pay for it and while driving back home i unwrap it from the plastic and it says manufactured by FRAM rolleyes.gif .......damnit! sorry but fram sucks ass....jeez, good quality oil filters for the EW are becoming yesterday.....so if you go to the dealer and find one of the real genuine made in japan ones....stock up on them cause theyre no longer available.....guess ill have to put up with this crap....sorry had to vent.
BTW......anyone know of any other good oil filters for the EW??

I think that fram HAS been doing them for honda for a while.

I hope davens will chime in with his post from the resource. Im on a semi perminant hiatus from there. So I hope he just copies it.

But there are some JDM filters made by a different group that are supposedly bigger.

Yes, they are manufactured by FRAM, but if you open up a FRAM filter and the Honda filter you will see that the Honda filter is manufactured to a different specification than the FRAM...it is a much higher quality filter than the FRAM.

Funny, I thought that partucular filter was for the brand new hondas, I don't even know if they would fit....

I get my filters from work, and NAPA carries the napa silver (crap) and gold, where the gold filters are basically Wix filters, I like them, I think they are a good filter...

Cheers,
Mark

Honda Fram is marginally better than standard Fram...I know it's not specific to 84-87 or even very scientific, but curiosity got the better of us. oil filter expose Geraldo style

And I've been aware of Fram making Honda oil filter for at least three years now. Although some of their filters are made by Filtech. The worse part is the cardboard end caps and how the bypass valve is simply pressed in the carboard. What happens to cardboard when oil soaks it?
I would much prefer a metal endcap that has the bypass valve riveted, welded, or hell, even soldered in place.

The S2000 & Insight filters are different from all the rest of the Honda line. The new "PLM" filter fits everything EXCEPT the S2000 & insight.

Davens & everyone else, you should read this thread from the same place (theoildrop):
The Oil Drop PLM thread

Just out of curiosity, when is the last time anyone had a legitimate oil filter problem? Until I could get a better deal on OE Honda filters, I've used the standard fram for the past 14 years (spanning 11 different cars in that time).

Here's what you bought, & it is better than a standard Fram.

The end cap in the Honda filter we cut open was cardboard, not metal and the bypass was plastic also:

i really dont see what the big hooplah is about with the filter, if u change it at 3000 it should be fine. I will , however add that the one who had owned my 84 crx had a "genuine "honda filter on the S.O.B and i think he followed that 7500 mile cycle and probably for about 60,000 miles or so to get a new filter because on this filter when i changed it had a seal as thin as paper. i guess he kept retighting it instead of changing it, also it poured out like molasses. matter of fact it took near an hour for that half quart to pour out from the filter.

If u really just want to throw your money away thinking you are gettin a good oil filter why not then buy a k and n one or a mobil 1 filter and switch over to synthetic. I would flush the engine oil firstbefore just pouring a full syn in there, the oil will turn into a jelly like substance over time.

my friend stuck one of those hybrid filters on his ZC powered 2g crx, supposedly raising oil pressure, which i believe was his only motives for changing his oil filter... this is a good thread, planning on buying the honda filters ;P those fram ones suck.........

I seriously don't see the problem with the cardboard end caps, even though they do seem to cheapen the product. The guys on the oil drop definately know what they are talking about, but spend an hour there and you'll be totally paranoid about petrolium products as well.

If the cardboard endcaps are so bad, then why isn't there an epidemic across the nation? How many billion cars are on the road with cardboard endcap oil filters? Think about the percentage of vehicle owners nationwide that consider a car/truck/SUV just "tranportation" and they have thier oil changed for them at the local grease monkey / jiffy lube / walmart / wherever. Do those places put "premium" grade oil filters in as standard proceedure? I don't think so.

I've got to believe that Honda knows they own the vehicle market share that they do because of their reliable reputation. Do you really think they'd compromise that reputation in thier biggest market by contracting a company to make cheap (read inferior) oil filters?

If you look through the drain holes in the PLM oil filters, you'll see that they are constructed just like the picture I posted...

I definatly don't want to get into an argument on the internet about this, so I hope nobody tries to escalate this topic. I'm just trying to point out what I see as reality so there isn't wide spread panic about oil filters...

BTW, I bought 10 PLM filters at the dealer last month. I've got 5 Honda cars. I'll be the first to eat my words if I experience a failure.
