That is what I am thinking, but as of yet, you are the only one that has given any worthwhile input. So I guess I still don't know how to compensate for this.

If the head is shaved the belt will have more slack in it therefore you have to compensate by adjusting the idler pulley. If the belt was that loose it would just slip across the teeth and eventually your timing would be so far off that you would probably start hitting the valves with the pistons. Maybe that is what has happened!JS

Nooooooo, this is not what has happened. Belt is tight on the front side and the adjusted side. Its just that the belt now hits at a halfway tooth mark, I am believing that I might need the adjustable camgear at this point, but, my main question is, do I advance(to the right) or retard(to the left) the gear/head.

OK I see what is happening. The head is shaved causing a difference in the length from the crank pulley to the cam pulley by the thickness of the shaved head or 1/2 a tooth as you say.

So your options without an adjustable cam gear is to turn the cam gear 1/2 tooth forward or backward but you need to know which way it should be??

Well, from the distributor point of view toward the firewall is advance so visually in my mind if you turn the cam gear toward the firewall it will retard the timing as it in essence makes the dizzy turn toward the front of the car. Did that make sense? JS

Try advancing it a tooth and seeing how it runs

Did that, it doesn't, retarded it, same thing. I am kinda lost.

Just went back and read this. So you have done what I suggested. So I am guessing your question was in relation to an adjustable cam gear!

Just look at the ACG and think about it logically. I forget which way it works. If you loosen the bolts what do you turn? The outer cam gear or the inner part. I suspect the inner part and dizzy stay put and you rotate the outer cam gear with the crank gear. The just think what the dizzy is doing, retard or advance. Now did I really confuse the issue? JS

Yes. and do I turn the cam toward the firewall to get it to TDC or not?

I believe what I have to do is to turn the gear toward teh firewall.

What Strudel is talking about makes more sense now that I think it through. There is no way the belt could line up when both upper and lower gear are at TDC and the distance between was shortened by shaving the head.

Unless you replace it with a stock head, looks like the adjustable cam gear is the way to go. There is a thread pertaining to this in the 1g section. It looks like they have advanced their timing to compensate for the amount shaved off.

Looks like you can either do this or shave the head again to make it exactly line up one tooth off and advance the cam one tooth.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Jim

mad.gif Stupid rain. I got a request for a color change last night. I am going to do it. Started pulling the pillar covers off last night, repainted the wing and the caps. It looked great. All I was needing was to run to the store and get a case of paint. I have to keep myself busy on it reguardless of what I am doing on it. So if mechanicals frustrate me, I will do something cosmetic. But, GEEZ, Can't a brutha catch a break?
