How's the compression on the motor?

I have a similar problem, though my car still runs, it just backfires at random intervals. Changed the whole motor/distributor to a different one and the car still runs poorly. Not looking for a solution, I will find it eventually.

I would check your fuel pressure and compression with a guage.

Cheers,
Mark

Compression is excellent. Oh I just talked to the previous owner and he said it was over heated before this started happening.
It's pretty good for what it is.

I have taken a picture of the temperature sensor but am not sure how to go about posting it. If someone can give me directions, I'll post a copy.

That I would have a cylinder leakdown test performed as well, then, to see if you have a head gasket leak between cylinders.

I was thinking a head gasket problem as well, but I've already done a head gasket and had the head rebuilt while I was at it. I think I'm going to look into the leakdown test, but compression is good on the motor. Thanks for all the help.

I found my problem.

Over a year of being discouraged and down on my crappy little motor I finally found it. I felt for you as soon as I read this thread seeing as I'm going through the same problems.

Here was my solution: I removed and plugged all the vacuum hoses from the black box while the motor was warm. Four little hoses and one large one. Machine screws to plug the hoses, and I left the large one free, as it is a source hose for the black box. You can plug it, if you want. I used one of the rubber caps on the AC rail to plug the small hose on the manifold and a 3/8 rubber cooler line and bolt to plug the large inlet.

Yes, it was that bloody simple.

If you have not tried this, do it now. Remove all the extra crap on your motor and get it as simple as possible.

Good Luck.
Mark

I have found after fumbling thru some repairs that didn't always solve the problem to take it to a certified mechanic for a diagnosis. I figure it as spending, well, lets say $500 for a repair. Not cheap, but only the cost of one new or used car payment. Cheaper than buying another cheap car and going thru inspections and government fees. And you'll be happy with it. If I can't figure it out, I take it up to Wilq's shop and have let them at it. You save a lot of money if you only F- it up once and learn as opposed to a relative who continually tries and fails doing more damage. Hope you all the best man.

Ok, now it is actually throwing the coolant temp sensor code. I'm changing it tonight, I'll let you know how it goes.

Ok so i pulled the plugs to replace them today, and they had alot of carbon build up on them. I've had them out before and cleaned them up before i installed them. The car has barely been ran. Heres a pic.

This leads me to beleive the car is running very rich. THanks for all the help.

i just got done with plugs and wires and everything else and it still does the same thing. i pulled the injector wiring off of #3 injector and it didnt make any difference. i checked the connection with a multimeter and it reads the same as the other injectors, so i replaced it and it didnt fix the problem. this made me think about spark. i pulled the plug wire and it made it start a little harder but really didnt make much difference otherwise. unfortunately i dont have a timing light to check for spark there....but for some reason i dont think its a problem. what else could it be?

oh yea i checked fuel pressure too and its really high, like 55-60 range.

Ok so I was reading some where that compression was supposed to be about 180 psi. My cylinders were as follows:

1: 160
2: 140
3: around 130 sad.gif
4: 160

Someone told me that if they were above 90 psi that the car would run ok, but i think I may have been mislead. Would this cause it to run like I've described? thanks for all the help, i dont know what i would do without you guys.
