today , my tstat housing temp was 180, and the outlet at the head about 190-200.
does anyone else have a laser thermometer? what are your inlet/outlet temps?
it may be possible that i am having some sort of electrical problem, because the head right at the temp sender is reading 180/190 , and the guage is nearly pegged. maybe something to do with the wiring for the digi-dash, who knows.
are these temps acceptable? seems hot to me...

Any way you can grab a gauge cluster out of the junkyard and rig that up to the temp sensor you have? Maybe it is the gauge cluster after all

i may try that,
i was hoping that someone on here knew the actual temps that are acceptable for this car.

190 for the actual water temp sounds about right to me but im not sure what the outside of the head should read on the lazer.

it seems odd that it would run hot on the free way too, makes me think the gauge is just broken.
On my civic, I know the fan switch is bad, so the fan never turns on, and the temp is fine as long as i'm going over 20 mph.
I also had a 4-runner, and while I was driving it around, the belt broke for the water pump, so there was no coolant movement at all, and the temp would stay near normal over 50 mph just from airflow.

If you're concerned about the engine getting too hot, I was told about a little trick that can be used. From the negative side of the thermo switch that kicks the fan on, splice in a wire and run it to ground. That will make is so the circuit completes when the ignition is engaged, i.e. when the engine is on, so is the fan.
*edit* I will also pass this along from Jeremy @ RineRacing from NorCalCRX.org board...
"Check Valve Lash*
*My car had an overheating problem which was resolved when I discovered that I had incorrectly set the valve lash. When I fixed it the car ran at normal temps again."

Just for shits and giggles...........
Go and get a bottle of that "bargs" Radiator leak....stuff
Looks like rabbit food in oil.................................................................
That shit works..................................
Run it for like 4 days.....
If it doesn't change anything........You just lost 5 bucks................
I Kept over heating...........
On a Brand new (used) motor
No Water in oil...... no smoke out of the tail pipe..........
But I kept overheating............
I replaced everything but the head gasket
still overheated...........
Put that stuff in there..................
............never overheated again ................ i replaced the headgasket 15 days later

dont use this stuff, next thing you know you will be replacing the water pump (if your lucky enough that it dont lock up and destroy the timing belt and valves) radiator, hoses and still be scratching your head but a lot more angry. this stuff is a temporary fix for someone that dont care how long the engine will last. find the problem and fix it correctly.

What about getting a multimeter and making sure that parts of your wiring harness aren't fried?
