When you check compression, crank the engine with the throttle wide open.

You can likely check and replace a rod bearing insert with the engine still in the car. It is definitely possible on the carbed models although the oil pan has to be tilted just right to slide it out.

if the crank journal is damaged, the engine will need to come out. If only the rod end is damaged (spun bearing) then the head can be pulled to replace the rod.

Best case scenario is that it is just a bad lifter noise- perhaps an adjuster nut came loose and you have tons of valve lash on one valve. Easy to check- just remove the valve cover.

Your car is a '87 DX Automatic, 4 spd Auto, 1.5 Liter, Carbureted, SOHC, CVCC, right ?
Were all the carbureted CRX's fitted with a CVCC cylinder head ?
And only the Si's were not CVCC ?
And the Compression Ratio was different.
Carbed was higher CR than Injected Si at 8.5:1 CR ?
Was the CR difference just from the cyl heads ?
Or are the piston domes different in carbed and injected short blocks ?
Phoenix CL there's a "full running" '85 Si Egine listed for $500
If it's got wheels or tatas, it's gonna consume time and money

I have bought a few transmissions using www.car-part.com It is an easy way to search local salvage yards and the prices are usually listed.
