Do people do that? Interesting.....

I was going to say No, but I think I've actually seen it done, rarely, bleeder location would be a bit of a problem with that mounting position.

Never seen it done, im just saying, if you wana drop the center of gravity.

I don't get how mounting the calipers like that would make the wheel base feel longer

other than the slight overhanging weight...

Back in the old old days of F1 before they knew about aerodynamics or anything they would put tons of ballast at the front and rear of the car to keep it in a strait line at high speed.

The overhanging weight does exactly that, it doesnt physicaly do anything to the wheel base, but it should alter the yaw center. Not much as its only like 10-15lbs total but, thats just how ive always seen it.

Yea mounting them upside down too would probably cause them to get all kinds of road debris in them.

Update 8/26/08: Dimple Dies and Clutch Brace

Hello all,

Today I started to make some dimple dies for my project. I've never built dimple dies before, so I was surprised they worked the first time out! I chose 40 degrees for my flange angle. I still don't know if that is the right angle to use. I also wanted to test the dies out, so I made a totally over kill, super duper, elcheapo deluxe pedal assembly brace. tongue.gif

I first took the broken pedal assembly and made a few welds in the most common places (this topic had been beaten up already):

Then I made a pattern for a sheet metal brace for the clutch bracket. I scored the back with a razor blade to make it bend nice:

Hummm, it fits! Imagine that:

Next I cut out and bend a piece of 18 gage cold rolled sheet, the same thickness as the pedal assembly:

Hummm, that one fit too! So far so good.

After I was satisfied with the brace, I made a couple dimple dies 1/2" and 5/8" in diameter. I plan on making a complete set of dies from 1/2" all the way to 3" in diameter. Here are the two I whipped out on the lathe (one set is assembled):

So lets get dimpled. First I need a hole:

Then a press of some kind. I just used the milling machine vise for these small dies:

And Voila! A dimple! blush.gif

It appears the 40 degree flange angle is alright.

Lets make another dimple, and see if the brace still fits:

And last but not least, lets weld it on. One weld looks like crap, but it will hold:

The dies work. cool.gif Not the coolest looking brace, but it will work. I will be using the dimple dies throughout my project and on the strut tower brace I am "Trying" to create.

Take care all!

David

I didn't weigh the H before I started working on it. I know I should have, but I was long into it before I made my hoist scale. Sorry.

I will have a weight of the two when it's done though just to show what can be achieved with a little effort. We can sort of add-back the weight I remove to try and get a good guess of what it was originally.

I can't believe the K is only 401lbs. That seems light to me. I know the H weighs more than that in stock trim. What kinds of accessories if any are included with your weights? Starter, alt, motor mounts, etc? I'm going to guess the H weighs more than 100lbs than the EW.

I actualy messed that up the K20 is heavyer.

And the Bseries is a B20Vtec with P/S pump. And the K20 might not have the alternator on it so might have to add another 10-15lbs to it.

The K and B motors were weighed with everything but A/C, and Exhaust manifolds. The H22 was engine, tranny, upper exhaust manifold, intake, and alternator, but NO other accesseries.

Yikes! 475lbs! The H22 is heavy! I will be lucky to get it down to 435, even with a lot of work. Oh well, I was hoping it would be lighter than that.

This new information has inspired me to finish the engine diet before I get too far and see what it really comes out to. If that damn engine ends up being that heavy, I should bite the bullet and consider going back to my original RexRod project idea of putting the engine in the back. Unless of course, I can figure out how to loose some major weight up front from other stuff. One idea I had was to make a one piece front clip that weighed like 20 lbs, or something like that. Fenders, hood, bumper, grill, header panel all in one piece. Could do a flip up hinge at the front like the old hot rods.

Thanks Brandon. If you keep this list updated, I will add it to my table of contents at the beginning so it's easy to find again. EDIT: Added to table of contents!

David

EDIT: I went farther back and found I originally thought the H22 combo would be about 150lbs heavier than the EW. You always hope you are wrong! blink.gif

Oh, my budget on this project could never survive a stroker kit. I just thought it was cool. biggrin.gif

If I felt I needed more ponies, and I don't, I could make more power for a ton less by building the necessary kit to adapt an Eaton M92, or something like that.

with all this extra time spent goofing around with unnecessary crap you could have been half way through mounting the engine in the back ph34r.gif

A good set of cams and pistons would do wonders in an H22, probably a better intake manifold too.
