AC would not cool so had a nearby shop look it over and turns out front seal on the compressor let go.  Probably why it was so noisy.  For some reason I had it in my head that it was a Sanden compressor but turns out it was a Keihen.

based on old posts has me concerned since we converted it to R134 and prior reports of that being an issue.  Also noticed that the rock auto site has a note not to use R134 in this compressor.

time will tell.  I can not find anything that explains why the Sanden is okay with it but the Keihen isn’t.

Took the car out for a short run to pick up some dinner last night.  It was a nice cool 112 outside so figured it would be a good test how well it cools.  Things stayed nice and comfortable throughout the drive and after parking it for a bit to run inside to pickup dinner.

never plan on intentionally driving her in conditions this hot but if we had to we could.

Took both of the CRXs to our church car show this weekend.  After about 6 hours of cleaning the 86 is much cleaner now. I know I am still going to find dirt though.

Had some great conversations with people about the cars and stories they have about these fun little cars.  People were shocked by the engine swap in the 86 and by how original the 85 is.

Got an amazing Craigslist score.  1985 mesh option wheels with new tires.  They are in really good shape except for the clear coat.  Guy only wanted $300. SOLD!

local company refinishes wheels so I’ll see what they want to address that.  Now I can sell the Prelude mesh wheels I had found previously.

I’ve only seen them a few times they sure are rare and even more so now days.  Couldn’t pass them up and think they will look sporty on the 85.

Went to drive the 85, wife had the truck, and discovered I had no AC.  Since it is under a 30k warranty for the AC work done last year I took it back to the same shop.  Turns out both the lines for the AC, suction and discharge, are leaking where the hoses go into the metal fittings.  Uggggg!

Bad news is OEMs are long gone and no one actually makes replacements in the aftermarket.  Good news is they have a local company that can rebuild them for us.  Not a shocker that 39 year old lines finally gave up.

Like you my junkyard AC score still held R12 when I pulled it out some years ago. My AC is still borderline with the R134, I changed the compressor from a TR70 to a sanden  and the filter drier, but kept the oem condenser. Having tinted windows would certainly help, even on a cloudy day, that car is the perfect green house.

Making AC lines is not too difficult, get the $200 tool and the proper hoses... of course in our cars, it is so tight to pass hoses around. I did it in the Jeep, it cools very well, and changed the condenser to parallel flow from serpentine that was the standard equipment in these years.

Cheers to your efforts

Thank you.  Glad to keep the AC especially her in AZ!

The Mrs and I both had doctor appointments the same day at different locations so she took the truck which left me with either the motorcycle, 86 CRX, or the 85 CRX.  Headed out and discovered no AC so had a rather toasty ride there and back.

There was a time the 86 was my daily driver, 1992 to 2004, and had no AC.  Well it did the first three years of ownership and I couldn’t afford to fix it so I pulled it out.  Amazing what didn’t bother me then but does now. Youth !
