Bad Thermo Related To Idle Surge?

I bought my 87 crx si about eight months ago. Im new to this site and I've got general knowledge about my car. This might be a stupid question..I dont know, but my thermostat just went out tonight and now the idle is surging. Are the two related, or did my fast idle vavle just go out also? If they are related, can someone explain how and why this is happening?
