UPDATE 6/9/07!! (pictures soon to come)

Its been quiet a while since I've updated my project here on RPR. I've been terribly busy with work in San Diego and my CR-X is here in Rancho Cucamonga. I only have limited weekend time to tinker with it.

Last week I installed my RPR panhard bar I had laying around. I was missing the big side rod end to it(long story) and finally got it, the jam nut and spacers to finally install it again. Dialed it in and took her for a spin, the familiar clunk, clunk from the rod ends have returned, just the way I like it! biggrin.gif

I have finally received my Koni shocks order two months ago. Beautiful peice's, can't wait to install them. Unfortunatly they will have to wait, since the shaft is too large to fit into the upper strut mount. These things really are massive. I'm looking for a set of Camber plates to use with these that can accomidate their larger shaft.

Also on order is my seat and roll bar, seat should be arriving early next week while the roll bar will be made in about 4 weeks.

Stay tuned, the next few weeks should bring some rather interesting updates!

My seat and harness have arrived,

The seat is a Ultra Shield Racing Pro Road Race seat. The cool thing about this seat is that you can customize your sizing in terms of waist and shoulder width as well as layback. Overall the seat fits awesome, snug but not tight around the waist, and the shoulder area is loose enough to allow ample movement of the my arms. It definatly is not too comfortable with nearly no padding. The seat is also fitted with locations for 4,5 and 6 point harnesses. I have owned a Bride racing seat before this and the USR seat is definatly the better of the two as of right now. I'll be installing it in the car in the next few weeks, whenever I get time to make some rails for it. The harness is a Simpson 5 Pt. in the Platinum series color with a 55" lap belt and cam lock.

The roll bar should be arriving within the next three weeks.

Another project of mine is cleaning up an old 85 Si valve cover. It was recently sand blasted and cleaned so that I could get to painting it. Primer was shot today along with a couple coats of wrinkle black.

Once the paint cures, I will start the polishing process.

The valve cover was finished next day, I think I rushed it a little. I'm terrible with paint but I'm learning with every piece that I shoot. I think it turned out decent and will probably be redoing the previous valve cover with what I have learned painting this one.

Koni shock install and CC plates should be installed within the next three weeks along with roll bar preperations.

Stay tuned,
Julian

Update,

AutoPower Roll bar install

I purchased and installed this roll bar a few weeks ago and have been too busy to make a post about it. I purchased the Race Roll Bar from AutoPower for the CR-X. This bar includes roll bar with two rear mounting points, a cross bar and harness bar. The install was pretty straight forward but keeping from scratching things was very difficult while manuevering the roll bar about the interior. I highly recomend removing the rear interior panels upon install. Once the holes are drilled and the roll bar in place, you can remove the roll bar and reinstall with the panels in place.

Here is the roll bar installed in the car,

Next up I need to get my seat mounted and suspension upgrade for the front, hopefully I can modify my old rails within the next two weeks.

Well I have applied it directly to the alloy of the valve cover on the first on and this time I tried it with primer first. The finished product was fairly similar. This valve cover I shot with three light coats and then baked it which I have found brings the wrinkle out a little better.

UPDATE - Front Shocks and Camber/Caster plate install

This is a copy of my post in the General section

As many of you know, a fellow member on here(firstgencrx) was kind enough to make some camber/caster plates for our cars. I was lucky enough to purchase one of his first sets which arrive to my doorstep Wedensday afternoon. I was very surprised upon opening the box, the parts looked of very high quality and everything was packed very well. The anodizing looked very even and smooth. I was in a special situation with my Koni shocks which had significantly larger shafts than my old Illumina's so I was provided specially sized spacers, which also fit exactly right. Overall the peice looked of very high quality, it's obvious lots of time was spent on making these.

I installed the plates Friday morning following David's instructions. Everything was straight forward and fit great. The only hold up I had was tools. I work at San Diego Volvo and the CR-X stays my house in Rancho Cucamonga a distance of 100 miles. My tool box is at work and I had assumed the allen fastners were metric, needless to say I was wrong. So I went to the local tool store and picked up some standard size allen sockets and torqued all the allen fasteners.

I torqued the upper fastners to 10 ft.-lbs. and the lower to factory spec 28 ft.-lbs.

The provided spacers go on either side of the pillow bearing with the longer of the two on the bottom. I also used anti-seize on all the fasteners as per David's instructions.

A comparison of the old Illumina's and the new Koni race shocks. Difficult to tell in the picture but the shaft on the Koni is much larger and the shock itself is shorter. You can also see both adjustment knobs on the Koni for seperate bump and rebound.

Here are the shocks installed

And, the CC Plates

The big picture

I've driven the car around the block the last few days and have noticed some positive gains at this point. The car feels much more stable in the corners and feels to have better traction through out the corner. I accredit this to the shocks. The front end feels more responsive especially with steering input. I accredit this to the now solid shock mounts. I have not adjust either camber or caster at this time and will not until I have an alignment rack available to properly set camber and toe angles.

Finally, I would like to thank David for such a great product and also for the tremendous amount of time he has put into this project. Please keep us all updated on future projects!

I've just sent my old seat bracket to be modified, so my USR racing seat should be in within another week or so. I also seem to have found a suitable block upon which I will build my bottom end, this should arrive within the next couple of months. Lastly a set of Aero Racing Wheels will be ordered to mount my slicks to so I can finally take this thing to the track. Updates soon to come!

UPDATE!!

Ultra Shield Race Road Race seat installed with Simpson 5 point cam lock harness.

I finally got around to modifying my aftermarket seat rails to work with my new Ultra Shield Race seat. The rails have no adjustment and retain the stock geometry, I made these rails to be as low as possible. My first impressions sitting in the seat were good. It felt reasonably comfortable and fit my dimensions very well at the legs, waist and shoulder area(which btw are available in different dimensions from USR). I found that I wanted a little more layback out of the seat which I got at 10*(they did have an option for 20*). The following day of the install I took the car to Scott's Weenie Roast, approximately 1 hour from my house in Rancho Cucamonga. I felt pretty uncomfortable in seat after about 30 minutes of driving which I attribute to the layback of the seat being too low, additionally getting in and out of the car has become a sort of crippling experience. Also on the ride I was very happy with the way the seat and harness held me in place and limited my movement, I feel a lot more comfortable driving the car around corners. It is definatly not something I would like to drive around on the streets with very often. Overall I'm happy with my setup, espeacially compared to stock and the "JDM" bucket seats, and don't have a whole lot of bad to say about my setup. I will continue to refine the setup by adjusting the layback, shimming the front of the seat, adding a seat brace attached to the roll bar and adding a quick release mechanism to aid in getting in and out of the vehicle.

Pictures below...

Also installed is the left side rear view mirror delete panel, feels strange driving the car on the streets without a mirror on one side but I'm getting used to it. The car rarely sees the streets so I'm not too worried.

UPDATE!!

New parts arrived,
First off, wheels from Aero Race Wheels these may look familiar from NASCAR. These will be my racing wheels and I plan to mount some Kumho V710's on these. They are 13x7 with a 4" back space spun steal wheel with no safety bead hump. Primary reason of buying these was mostly their cheap price didn't want anything too fancy for a racing wheel. Pictures below...

Delrin/Polyurethane LCA bushings,
Not much to explain here just trying to tighten up the front end a little more with these puppies. Picture below...

Integra LCA's
Unfortunatly I recieved a package from acuraOEMparts.com, a dealership in FL, with only a left side LCA dry.gif Apparently something happened during shipping. Called them this morning and withing 5 minutes they had another one on order no questions asked no charge. I have to commend them for having great customer service and fast processing. Dealing with Hondapartsdeals.com is usually very slow and usually takes over 1 week for a shipment if a part is special order then another week for the shipping itself. From acuraOEMparts.com my parts were shipped within 2 days with a tracking number and recieved the parts by the end of the week. I would definatly do business with them again.

Anyways this part is to increase camber. I am limited with my camber plates due to my large shaft diameter and bump stop on my Koni shocks. This will put me up another 1*. I also didn't want to mess around with used ball joints so I opted for new units. Picture below...

Install to follow shortly.

Stay tuned,
Julian

nice torque wrench you got there...!

also, agree on acuraOEMparts.com, I ordered close to $1000 worth of parts from them during last 6 months or so.. never had any problem with them.

UPDATE 12-3-07

Took the car out for its first open track event this past weekend. Very fun and helped to give me a good view of how the car is performing.

Speaking of performance the car felt very good with its current set up. Very neutral in the corners and well balanced. The car rotated well and the tires provided plenty of traction. The brakes also felt phenominal. From the first lap to the last the pedal was firm, even with the year old Motul 5.1 fluid and the Porterfield pads slowed the car reasonably well. I must admit I was a bit worried about the way the engine would perform espeacially with no oil cooler to speak of but it was solid from start to finish. As always, could use more power. I drove with an instructor who said that I drove well and picked up the line very quickly(Gran Turismo training perhaps), but more surprising me he praised me of my car and its setup. He even told me my car was faster than the Miata he was running that day, and thats coming from Brian Goodwin(good-win-racing.com)! All in all I loved the event and was very happy with the car. I was advised not to touch the car set up which I will wisely follow. As I say I'm very happy with the car and would only like to tweak some areas where I am uncomfortable like the shifter response and positioning. The next event is already being planned. Pictures of the event are below.

Update on the car, Kumho V710's in 215/50/13 mounted on Aero Race 31 series wheels in 13 x 7 are on the car and scrubbed in. In addition to this the car was aligned with 1.7 degrees of camber front and very close to zero toe in the front, caster also remains stock. Integra LCA's, Poly-Delrin bushings and a right side rebuilt axle installed as well. Pictures are below.

Next up for the car will be shifter modification and Porterfield rear shoes and maybe even alloy drums(I know Scotts rubbing off on me)

Stay Tuned,
Julian
