i was thinking of making mine like this so it wouldent have any problems with clearence.

in the pic the brace would be mounted on the inside of the mount istead of the side .

Make sure it doesn't interfere w/the phb when the suspension is in full compression. Remove the springs and shocks and cycle the axle beam thru it's full travel to check.

KAKABOX Cold Air Intake...or KAKACAI!

After stripping the eng bay I discovered a large "porthole" behind the air box:

...which leads to the inner fender, a good source of cool air:

Hmmmmm, got me thinking...I don't want to take my intake air from the usually hot engine bay; that defeats the purpose of a CAI...and I don't want to remove the rhs headlight...hmmmmm.

Here's the stock 3g Si airbox w/the snorkle that connects to oem air intake baffles...it points down towards the ground, but it still has access to warm eng bay air:

The snorkle is just a seperate rubber tube that attaches to the oval shaped hole in the air box kind of like the way a grommet attaches. It can be rotated and still stay attached to the box. I turned the snorkle 90* to point towards the inner fender porthole hoping that it would protrude into the inner fender for a source of cool air:

...and it does! The end of the snorkle just pokes thru the hole, accessing the cooler inner fender air.

There was still a slight gap around the snorkle end and the hole, so, I cut a piece of a mystery duct that I found on the ground at Pull-a-Part:

The piece I cut fit tightly in the hole, almost like it was made for it. It provided a 'female' end for the snorkle to fit inside. It completely filled the hole and extended the snorkle further into the inner fender well:

...continued...

...KAKACAI continued...

So, now that the air box receives cool air from the inner fenderwell, all that's needed is a free-flowing K&N panel filter...and BAM! a KAKACAI, completely sealed from pre-heated engine bay air!:

Total cost: ~$35 for the K&N filter (Summit Racing)

Cheers! cool.gif

I don't own a 3gen or an Si, but does the inner fender recieve sufficient air?

Yes, from outside the car.

Original post: "I don't own a 3gen or an Si, but does the inner fender recieve air?"

Hmmmmmmm, looks like you snuck in the word "sufficient" w/o triggering an edit label...sneaky! ph34r.gif How do you do that?

Yes, I believe there are sufficient quanities of fresh, relatively cool air available in the rhs inner fender!

wink.gif the perks of being a Contributing Memeber biggrin.gif. But I guess there will be adequate air.

Ah, yes...very good then.

I really don't think any venting will be required...the KAKACAI draws air from an open cavity in the inner fender that receives outside air thru this cutout behind the rhs headlight/corner light area, here:

...and another cutout down lower, behind the bumper, here:

The lhs doesn't have these two cutouts, so, that side may be more relatively sealed from outside air:

Cheers! cool.gif

Huh? blink.gif What would "pop" off?

The fender have plastic inner liners that prevent dirt & grit, etc. from getting into the cavity.

Preventing dirt from getting into the motor is the air filter's job and the K&N is very effective.

Thanks for literally pointing it out laugh.gif. crx's don't have those cutouts... but now I know hb's do.

I forgot about the filter laugh.gif I was meaning at like a high rpm shift, if the motor jerked a little and pulled those two pieces apart....you probably wouldnt feel it at first, and then your wheel would be kicking stuff in there.....let alone going through a puddle.

But yeah, you should be ok with the filter in there

The airbox is firmly mounted to the chassis...it moves w/the chassis. The snorkel is part of the factory air box, I just rotated it...it won't pop off either.

If the motor shifted enough it might pop off the tb's intake tube, but I doubt it; the motor would have to move a lot to do that.

I think you may have also forgotten about the plastic inner fender liners that prevent debris from getting into that cavity. Same w/puddle water...it's deflected by the liners.
