"This time I'm going to do it right" is something I've said a few times before; this time I mean it!
Hopefully this thread will serve as a place to organize my progress with pictures, discussion, and bits of relevant information.

Got this gem from BP, thanks again! 'came with a partly installed 1.3 4spd which was a wonderful christmas present to the "trash ferries" that take the metal that I set in front of my house style_emoticons/default/smile.gif.

Wheels/tires:
-DA 14" 'swirlies' with 195/60/14 Bridgestone Potenza re960as

Suspension:
-ES black bushing kit (to be installed)
-Tokico illuminas
-Teg t-bars (not installed yet)
-rsx or prelude springs, experimenting with the smaller lude springs at the moment.
-remove internal sway bar (not uninstalled yet)
-2wd wagon front sway bar mounted on rear axle (not installed yet)
-Chedda j rear shock bushings

Brakes:
-Egay steel braided lines
-5g DX front brakes/stock rear drums, ceramic pads/oe replacement shoes

Engine:
-EW4 new rings, head shaved 0.030," 3 angle valve job, gasket matched intake and exhaust
-1.3 Cam for now, regrind later
-Gasket matched IM with Weber 32/36 DGEV
-gasket match IM, USDM with 81 Ford Escort EXP (Weber/Holley/Motorcraft 740) carb. (shelved due to time constriant although quite viable)

Exhaust:
-old Jackson Racing 4-2-1 header
-ebay 2.25 baffle
-crunch bent 2" to Walker soundfx dual exit muffler, not the quietest but it is acceptable

Transmission:
-86 crx Si, nothing special
-Stock resurfaced flywheel, machined lip extra to add a little clamping pressure
-Beck Arnley clutch, $35 on rock auto a couple years ago style_emoticons/default/wink.gif
-Cheddaj solid shifter bushings

Exterior:
-Ek spoiler molded into the rear hatch already, I plan to clean up the bondo and make it look a little more OEM if possible
-hi/low 6000k HIDs, got em cheap

Interior:
-1g teg seats, thanks BP
-Si cluster
-cheapo cd head unit, debating on removing it in favor of a headphone jack and a hidden amp (PowerWheels86 style!)
-OE rear option speakers (not yet installed, need new speakers)
-more to add here as there has been some work done to the interior already

Goals:
(general)
-Faster 1/4 mile, better fuel economy, and better handling than a 8g Si, without giving up any major creature comforts.

(specific)
-35/40mpg+ I'd like to squeeze as much economy out of this thing as possible.
-100% reliable, I want to be able to drive to Canada and back on a whim!
-decent A/C, I live in the south, its hot as hell here
-15.1 or better quarter mile
-to handle as well as it can with as little investment as possible- Simple bang for the buck mods

Thanks for the encouragement guys!

I wish I'd taken before pictures of the engine, it was a sight to see. If you can imagine probably the dirtiest Honda engine you've ever seen, this was probably worse. There was 1-5mm of thick, and often hard, oil/grease/petroleum products of some sort + dirt/grime/sand. This is the result of well over 10 hrs of cleaning:

The top of the pistons had a HUGE amount of carbon and semi burned oil residue from bad valve guides, valve stem seals, and sitting for several years.

Question: I would think that I should pull the pistons out and clean up the ring grooves then reinstall the pistons but I'd like to hear it from the guys that have done this sort of thing a few times to affirm that this is necessary- I really don't want to mess with it if I don't have to.

do the cyl walls look good? no ridge at the top?

i would simply pour kerosene in the cyls with the pan off, let it dissolve whats in there.

if you take it apart, i would go ahead and do bearings since u would be taking them apart. since i am cheap i would go route 1. up to you of course.

The spoiler is from an EK hatch, its a relic of an old member who has since moved on to the dark and douchey side of auto enthusiasm, BMW's.

Here's a picture I found of the engine after the first few hours of cleaning and just removing the head- notice all of the oil residue/buildup on the pistons!!

You need to rebuild that motor. new rings
nothing worse then putting a motor together and
having it smoke like a champ when your done.
Sorry but it looks ruff

I will sad.gif I'm just being grumpy.

The engine only has 120k or less on it, I got the engine as a freebie from the original owner who had it sitting for several years- I honestly think all that crap on the pistons is from sitting. I suppose I do have to bite the bullet and clean it up thoroughly to get me by... I never planned to keep this engine very long but I have to act as if I'm going to keep it for a long time to be on the safe side.
