hey all,

Anjin and I decided on the weekend that we will take on a CRX Track Car project together and have some fun locally. I did some running around late last week and this week and tonight we visited the current owner to see our new project car.. and agreed to take delivery next week.

Bit of background history:

this is said to be a gen1 CRX build and raced by MUGEN in Japan in the 80s and early 90s before it arrived in Perth, West OZ and was raced by a couple race car drivers until finding a bit of rest in 2005. 4yrs later we're going to take it out of retirement, and hope have it on the track for some fun very soon.
Its fully caged and log booked, cage is said to be built by Mugen and approved for racing under the old skool rules - its made from lighter metals than the cages of today..
It used a ZC motor, but we might stick either a B16A or B18C into it - however it comes with plenty of spares including a ZC motor, spare head, extractors, MUGEN cams, race gbox with LSD and so on..

without further-ado - here's a pic of said race car...

We are going to work out where it will be stored and worked on - but progress pics will be posted as we go along..

Cheers
Mike

NUTS. It sounds like a one-of-a-kind car.

Above all, it is quite an honor to have a car with this kind of heritage as part of the RPR family.

Congrats to you, and GREAT luck with the build!

just a bit of a note the 1st Australian Owner posted on our forums

QUOTE
It really did do duty in a "one make series" for CRX's in Japan in the mid eighties. Somewhere I think I still have photos of my baby on track in Japan! It never turned a wheel on civilian roads, going straight from the Honda factory, to the Mugen factory and then onto the race track.

The car was brought to Australia in early 1989, and raced by me till 1996 with some success. It holds the lap record for a now defunct class - Road Runners U1600cc. 72.89 seconds if I remember correctly [set in 1992]. If the class had continued that would have been lowered to 68.56 set in 1996.

The Mugen modifications were typical for a "one make series", Showa dampers [I think they are still on the car] and Mugen springs, gutted interior, Mugen cage and Mugen N1 computer, and a race seat with harness. Had a ZC motor [bog standard], 5 speed gearbox with Mugen LSD and standard gearing. the headers were standard cast items, but from there back it was a Mugen item.

more pics - thats all i have so far:

Please not not ruin that piece of Honda/Mugen history with a B or any other series engine swap,

Looks like a great project but i think you should work the ZC and get the power from the stock power-plant i know its capable of some high numbers

sad.gif I know ... I have the B sitting there ready to raced - thats the only point. B is quick install and im off - while the ZC will take time. the ZC will find its way back in there... thats the plan atm.

I say drop the B in it, decimate all opposers while you build the zc. Than when the zc is done drop that in there and once again decimate them all over again. Need I say more. ph34r.gif

seems a lot of effort to swap in B series then change back later,

Why not just use a stock ZC in there (not D16) its should still be pretty quick, or if it isn't there is something seriously wrong with it, cause i know what ZCs go like even without Mugen gear strapped on.

It is a car with a great race history. But, if it had been campaigned longer, it would have had a B series in it. So the idea is to do the B swap - which we have most parts for and experience in doing - run it for a couple of years while we rebuild the zc properly, and then revert it to the original format at about the time it becomes eligible for historical category events.

The B series period is just the logical extension of the development of the car.

But its not going to be a full on B swap track car - we want to have the car still undamaged at the end of that exercise. My 1CRX666 is more the one that will be run 10/10th's. This one we will run 8/10th's.

Anyhow, thats how we see it.
