#580628 Project Mad Max: 87 Crx Si 108k Restoration To Daily Driver

Posted by Aras3G on 12 February 2022 - 06:13 AM in Projects

Real cool cars Grease! Glad to seem them well taken care off.

Max is a really lucky kid, having his own clean Japanese classic, a garage to work on it with his father. Projects must be way to go for bonding and having good time with the family. Dreaming to have something similar one day.

Hope to see Max here as well and keep the 1G/3G tradition alive!

Drive safe!

#580579 Coolant Hoses And Rotted Coolant Inlets / Outlets

If they also fit later models they would have shown up on the list of other models that they fit.  No later models appeared, sorry.

Yeah sadly they dont. Im still thinking about getting a set then maybe cut them to fit if I can get a good deal. Probably not all of them would fit but I belive I can make it work with some "custom tailoring" lol.

Thanks for the repsonse.

i’d need to see pix or p/n’s. best to look up the honda websites for p/n’s. i have good luck using those p/n’s and searching ebay

apparently, it’s best to use the old green antifreeze. it’s made for our metallurgy (copper radiator and the bypass tube in the back of the engine). i had put in toyota red anti freeze for 1995-2005 cars, i noticed it was making my copper radiator shiny when i opened the cap. green this is for older US cars. i believe newer radiator fluid eats away at the copper/brass parts via electrolysis. people have a hard time sourcing that copper tube in the back of the engine

i’ve got some background in metallurgy, more in polymers. i’d source new/used housing/outlet lubes. chemical reaction and temperature stress under pressure is risk. not familiar w the material you are using

Thanks for replying. Yeah green coolant for aluminum seems to be the way, thats what hayness manual says atleast. Still looking up on the organic and inorganic coolant types theres a lot of discussions on them just like engine oil lol.

OEM Numbers for parts that I am talking about:

Coolant Neck / Outlet: 19315-PE0-010

Thermostat Housings: 19320-PE0-000 & 19311-PE0-000

Trying to upload the pics of mine before and after cleaning with a wire brush and sandpaper but forum just doesnt let me upload I dont know why. Imgur or Lightshot also does not accept eventhough the files are in JPEG.

I can send them through email or any other way you prefer.

I would go do a parts look up on a Honda parts site online.  You will see what other cars the part fits.  I did a quick search and it seems all of the 84-87 Civics and CRXs all shared the same radiator hoses, 1.3L and 1.5L here in the US.  Got to imagine it’s the same in Europe.

Yeah I know the hoses are usable on both 1.3L and 1.5L engines from 84-87. But the thing is there are no parted out 84-87 civics near me, only seen 2 other cars. 1st gen crx's never entered Turkey. Finding and importing from EU is really hard due to customs and expensive. That's why I asked about later generations. Some parts of EW's are usable with SOHC D series but not hoses afaik, later EW's became first D serires (EW4---->D14A4). Guess I'll bite the bullet and try the 4th gen hoses for D14 or ask around more for where I can get custom hoses. If anyone else knows please chime in. I use Amayama to check for OEM codes and compatibility by the way.

What about the damaged water neck and thermostat repair with polyester putty? Im still searching online for effects of antifreeze against polyester putty. Will that work or is there a more viable way to fix them? As I said I can send pictures of it but it doesnt let me post on the thread.

Thanks,

Aras

Hello Peppers !

Hope everyone is doing well.

I have been busy with university stuff so took a break for tinkering with my car. Recently took the manifold and carb to home and cleaned them. Still looking for gaskets for intake manifold and 2-barrel carb. Also took apart the  water neck with the coolant air bleeder valve (that was also clogged but couldnt figure out a way to make it work, I tried to to blow through it but I couldnt because its clogged or something else. Looked up online for the passages but there is no clear pictures of it so if any of you have please share with me or I can send pics of mine and you can tell me whats wrong with it.

I also took apart the thermostat housing from the water pipe. Because the previous owner didnt use any antifreeze most of the water inlets and outlets are rotted and not in a good condition. Even more suprising part is, when I took apart the thermostat housing there was no freaking thermostat in it. There was just a black gasket of it and additional gasket maker to seal the crumbled mating surfaces. I was doubting my self thinking that I must have dropped the thermostat while disassembling the housing and stuff, but I checked the engine bay and floor twice in different days still no thermostat to be seen. The ends where coolant hoses go over are all crusted and mostly crumbled. Thinking about somehow finding a decent fabricator and weld in the same diameter inlets/outlets.

Im thinking about filling and fixing the metal water neck and thermostat housing with metal filler and sand them down as close to original sizes. (I cant seem to upload / share photos on the forum I dont know why, but I have them on hand and send pictures of them to clarify their condition if anyone want to learn more, any help is appriciated :). So I was wondering when I gradually add antifreeze, will it eat away the metal filler / putty? If so Im open to any possible solutions or ideas.

Coolant hoses are also not in good condition, filled with rust residue and gunk. Im looking for complete coolant hose kits for EV2 engine but cant seem to find any. I have only found mishimotos set, which it says it will also fit to 84 civics. Mishimoto SKU for it is: MMHOSE-CIV-88RD . Here's the link for it where I looked up: (https://www.hoonigan...32242560893013)

When I check it on Mishimotos website it says its direct fit for 1988-1991 civics, 4th gens. So I was wondering will the coolant hoses fit to 3rd gens as well? Some looked similar but Im not really sure. EW's are similar to SOHC D series and most EW parts fit to EV2 as well, so that was my logic behind it.

I also found 5th gen hose kits localy which it also says fits to D14 and D16 same  family with the 4th gen SOHC engines, so if those also fit I might just grab them because they are cheaper.

The car is just sitting in the car park because of the winter and Im just trying to get my hands on some parts. So it will most likely continue to sit till the spring.

Im all ears for any suggestions or ideas they are all much appriciated. As I said I will gladly send the pictures of the parts via email if it helps for assesing the the problems or solutions better.

This forum is my only hope for the info that Im looking for so please if you have any idea or opinion on it, please do share I would be grateful.

Thanks in advance for your help, wishing the best for everyone.

Sincerely,

Aras

#580484 Anyone Still Out There?

That’s odd.  Just post it in here.  May be because your so new but I have no clue.

Hello

Sorry for not posting in a while, stuff got in way.

My friend is K-swaping his 92' EG Hatch and he is upgrading the whole brake system. Im in need of brakes as its not good and even had few close calls in when city driving, the pedal just randomly pops up and stiffens and you just lose the stopping power found that pumping the pedal helped a little but still not sure whats the reason for it. We removed EG's master cylinder to fit mine but patterns are diffrent on the booster (Non-si preludes are non existent in Turkey so cant get my hands on one). So I was thinking about just swapping the whole brake system to my car inorder to solve my random braking problems.

Is it possible fit the brakes from an EG to 3G without welding/cutting as I dont have the tools, skills or money to afford. Thinking about changing it in garage would I require any special tools or stuff? Will the brake booster fit or should I only swap some parts like calipers and rotors? I do not know what parts would fit or not so looking forward to hear from you guys if you have any other ideas please chime in as well.

Also I am planning to swap the 2 fan half sized radiator from his EG. I took it home and cleaned the hoses it looks decent. The previous owner swapped the radiator from a random car here and ran the car with drinking water not anti freeze. Im not sure with its cooling power my temps just goes up and down most of the time, fan kicks when its too hot for my liking so I manually switch it on or off with a button. Car also leaked coolant when I first got it but a mechanic sealed it but I still have to check and top up the water after every ride.

I know that our cars are pretty much special when it comes to parts and stuff but is it possible to fit any parts (engine, transmission, suspension interior just anything) from EG's and EF's without much hassle? Those are the ones that we have here so I dont have any options.

Thanks for reading. Looking forward to hear from you.

Welcome to RPR.  Site was down for a while but thankfully it’s back!  One of the best recourses on the web for these cars.  So much knowledge recorded.

many switched to the FaceBook version a number of years ago but I am hopeful they will slowly come back as FB doesn’t capture the discussions like the website does.

that said responses may be slower but someone will chime in.  You can tell by all the threads I am very active on here, not a FB fan so I hang out here.

Yeah I see what you mean, I dont use facebook as well but maybe I should check it out if they are more active there. Hope people come back here though as you said this forum is really something special. Will post a question that I had for a while now dont want to hijack this thread I would be really happy if you can chime in.

Edit: I can't seem to start a new topic it crashes and says refresh the page. Is it only me?

Hello Everyone!

I am a young owner of a 83' 3rd Gen Civic with 1.3 Carb'd EV2 with 5 speed from Turkey. This forum has been a goldmine for me as literally as no one in Turkey is trying to get these cars back on road and most of them have been scrapped (Seen only 2 other 3rd gens, one on sale and other was a neglected road driven one by an old guy.) plus we dont really have scrapyards that you can pull and haul like us so parts are extremly hard and expensive  . I was extremely worried that site shut downed forever as no one else speaks about 3rd gen civics and 1st gen crx's and the info up here is simply lifesaver.

I will probably have a lot of questions and they may sound dumb but I wanna do everything by myself on the car because mechanics here has done nothing but fuck up my car, last one broke the speedometer cable so right now dont have speedo/odometer but cool thing about the car is its so slow whatever I do I should be fine lol, plus im a broke college kid which makes this adventure a tad harder.

Anyway wanted to say hi as I have been using the forum for last 4 months but newly created an account and so happy to see the forum still kickin.

See yall around, stay safe have a good one.
