Anyone here done any plastic repair on a 1g CRX?

The wide exterior plastic panel on my passenger side door has developed a north/south crack...it wasn't there a month ago unsure.gif . I just replaced the driver's side door due to that and a bad window regulator. The local dealership wants $186 just for that panel so I replaced the entire door for $125 (junkyard).

Finding a replacement panel is like finding chicken's teeth...they just don't exist here in middle GA. Is there a Bondo like product out there that works on plastic, or do I have to invest in a plastic welder?

Plastic stuff is not worth repairing. It is cheap and gets brittle with age. Replacement is the best option. I have patched the back of plastic panels with fiberglass before, only to keep the crack from getting bigger.

Going to Hawaii? You need a Dune Buggy.

WTB: 14x8 or 9" Panasports or Watanabe RS.

hi Dadd.

ive done some plastic welding on both my gen1 crxs - header panels, fenders, door pods and bumpers included... including chunks missing out of the parts and new ones welded in.

If you can spend a day or two playing with a soldering iron - you can fix it... smile.gif

here is a link to my project crx - its now on the road but there are pics of what it used to be like and how i welded stuff.

Back in the earlier 90's there was a toy truck that had plastic accsorys that you would "weld" on with a plastic welder that came w/ the toy. Unfortunetly this toy, the welder and the plastic welding rods were discontunued w/ in a year of production... If these welding rods were still in production, they would be PERFECT for repairing our plastic parts on out cars!

Maybe too many kids ate them and choked to death. That doesn't sound like a safe toy.

Wasn't that the "Spin Welder"? My cousin's kids had that toy. There was a little electric drill thingy, which was used to spin a small "welding" rod on your target parts. From the friction the rod would melt at the tip, tacking the parts together. Naturally the kids tried to weld stuff on each other after they got bored with trying to assemble the truck. Good times, good times.

Hmmm...I'll prowl the flea markets and I might find a way to fix my rocker panels!

if you sand with a high speed mini sander and it starts to melt its non abs , if it sands like bondo and dusts up its abs.

If you fix it or replace it get a front strut tower brace to reduce flexing and cracking more panels.
