 Sounds like the idle circuit is plugged up (not getting fuel and air though) Did you try taking the mixture screw out and blowing compressed air from the venturi back through the hole where the mixture screw goes?

I  don't think the idle circuit is plugged because after 3 min of run time the idle is steady as is every other parameter. This problem only occurs in the first 3 min after starting a cold engine. And it only happens after the throttle is depress and the linkage comes off of fast idle. After three min on fast idle I can press the accelerator and the engine idle is normal. But I appreciate the reply. There are so many components to the carbed CRX, all vacuum controlled, that it is mind boggling. I have spent hours reading the manual and running test on the components that I can identify and find. I have even considered buying another carb. But that is an expensive experiment.

So, it has been about six months since my last post. I have done a fair amount of troubleshooting. Here is a quick review of the symptoms. With the engine cold I put the throttle to the floor and release. The engine starts immediately and idles at 2000 rpm. If I immediately push the throttle down, even a small amount, and release, the engine comes off of fast idle and quiets. If I try to start it without touching the throttle it starts and quits. If I put the throttle to the floor and start it runs smoothly at 2000. If I allow it to run at fast idle for about 2 or 3 minutes and then give it throttle it goes off of fast idle and runs smoothly at about 1000 rpm and has no further problems until the engine cools again.

I have verified, using the Honda maintenance manual and vacuum pump, that the fast idle unloader, choke opener. throttle controller diaphram, and secondary diaphram are working. The idle screw is set so the warm engine idles at about 900 to 1000. I have purpose set it high to mitigate some of the above problem. 

So the problem comes down to this. If I accelerate the cold engine it quits as soon as I release the throttle. Anyone have any ideas?

One last symptom I discovered today. After driving the car 35 miles I turned it off and it sat for about 2 hours on a 55 degree day. When I first started it would idle for about 10 seconds at about 900 and then drop to zero. I restarted about 4 times with the same result each time. Then after about 3 min of normal driving it idled normally from then on..

What is weird on my car is how short the duration of the stalling condition is. It starts normally although I have to add throttle to keep it running for the first 10 seconds or so. It then idles smoothly at about 2200 on a 40 degree day. It steps down a few minutes later to about 1500. But in a minute or two the next step is to zero unless I keep it going with throttle. This condition lasts about 1 min and after that I it runs like new.
