I need help. Flushed the coolant already, put water wetter, new thermostat, put racing oil that "keeps the engine cooler" same with trans fluid, fan working but got a cheap $7 wiring kit and I had to use 18 gauge wire for the set up instead of 12. Put new spark plugs, NGK double platinum and set the gap to .040

Any recommendations? What spark plug should I use to run it cooler if possible, recommendations on coolant? I only have one fan on my 1987 Crx Si, should I get two? Will changing to correct wiring do that much of a difference? Help!

Looks fine to me. That's about where my fan kicks on. What makes you say it's overheating? Those gauges aren't really useful for "gauging" anything. Just a general idea. Get a cheap pyrometer (lots of uses) and check the head temps when the gauge is where it likes to be and see if it isn't close to thermostat temp.

I feel like the temperature gauge fluctuates too much. Anyways will follow your recommendations and I plan on getting a temperature gauge in degrees to get more specific readings and in hopes that it's accurate.

Another question for you guys. At what temperature does your engine run at with at the area where the temp sensor is at normal idling. Mine reads 200 degrees Fahrenheit.

And that's after driving 10 miles an letting it idling for a few minutes. Not just after warm up

Mine sits at the same spot on the highway, but goes to halfway when I stop.  really weird

@MichaelStar like dirtcircle86 said these gauges don't really work, more for a general idea. My fuel gauge is all over the place all the time but I go per mileage on that so it's not a bit deal but temp sensor is something I really care about. I'm going to wire up my own temp gauge in degrees.

Yup, that's where mine sits when the fan is cycling. Checked the head in multiple locations and it is at thermostat temp, between 175 and 185. Maybe 190 near the exhaust ports.

get a thermo-gun and monitor the head temps while it warms up and feel the hoses, most thermostats open up around 175, and fans kick on around 200-205. my cars fan reads a little over half then I can hear the fans come on.  that should be a good test for your gauge. if all else fails swap out another sending unit and retest,  make sure your running the factory fan and shroud, that your radiator fins aren't all clogged up with dirt.  I like to use the garden hose to clean out my fins. try all those and see if it helps

Well I got a cheap thermo gun and it reads 200 degrees at the area where the temp sensor is at the head, 186 on the valve cover. I did notice that when the previous owner got the car painted that the radiator also got painted as well so could the paint be blocking air flow?

Going to for a drive right now and monitor the temp with the thermo gun.

So just took a reading. This little thermo gun fluctuates a bit but it reads the head in the temp sensor area as around 210+- 2 degrees. Not sure what the operating temp for our engines although I do know engines range from 190-210. Any more inputs?

Anyone with a thermo gun, what are your readings?
