I just bought a 86 civic si hatchback for cheap. I need to take the factory radio out to put in a new one. I had the glove box off and the steering column off but couldn't figure out how to get the dash off. I couldn't figure out the rt steps to get the whole dash off. If i could get the correct steps to do this it would be very helpful. Thanks

You don't need to remove the dash to get the radio out.
Pull the knobs off and undo the thin hex nuts under the knobs.

At most you would remove the ashtray, lower panels, and glovebox.
Check to see if the radio is backstrapped.

No 86 Civic came with a radio installed.
All radios were installed at the dealer or aftermarket.

Well thank God for that, 'cause if I wasn't, this would probably have never worked.

For mine I normally just needed to remove the ashtray and its slide mount. They I could get to a screw or two that held the radio in at the back. Then open the glove box and push the radio forward from the back so that I didn't break the face plate. No need to remove knobs and hex nuts, its not like older radios with the knobs on each side. If someone happen to have that style in the car it was on an adaptor plate that slides right out the square hole the radio is sitting in.

Some aftermarket ones are a real problem though. Some have a metal trim that you put in first then bent tabs to hold it in. the radio then slid and locked in place and you need a removal tool to get it back out.

Thanks for the info. That's my big problem tho, there's an aftermarket cd player in, and i can tell the tabs are restricting it from sliding out. I don't want to break anything so that's why i was trying to just take everything off around it. Plus who ever hooked it up did a sh**ty job with the wires. My rt front speaker won't work and the left cuts in and out because of bad con. I've traced the bad connection to the wiring in the back of the cd player to the cars wire. But the way tty hey wired it up doesn't mske sence. Anybody have the color code to what wire does what. That's what i plan on doing today is get the cd player out and the wiring figured out and done rt. Any help will be greatly helpful. Thanks

Oh, well your first post said factory radio.

Maybe best just to pull up to an audio shop and see if they have the removal tools for that model radio. They may be nice and let you use them or just pull the radio out for a few bucks. Some have long tabs (long enough to go beyond the black trim you see) and removing the whole dash is just not worth it if a tool can get it out in a few seconds.
