recently restocked my refrigerant supply and figured I'd pass on today's market value in tx. temps here are fluctuating, but daily highs are 55-75. the rest of the country is still in furnace mode. right time to buy.

refrigerant is a commodity and fluctuates , so jan,feb is usually best procurement time.

I was able to find r12. oreilly's had it for $56/ 12oz can. that's like $70/ pound. napa had it for $800/30# cylinder, $27.5/#. ebay has cans for $28-50.

r134a was $140/30# cylinder at my local hvac shop and $108 at napa (car quest), $3.2/#. 12oz cans $10-15' that's $13-20/#.

my neighbors were getting charged 70-100/# last summer for r22 from contractors. hvac shop had a 30 pounder for 290 the other day. $9.5/#. some shops had it for $700 retail.

it's available! but all over the place cost wise.

evacuated my fridge last week, fixed a leak and recharged. cycles now as it should. my first time working on a small appliance. very different from a car or central air. glad I saved my old window units, I'll pull those out next time I'm looking for a project.

hope this helps some of you

I've always gotten mine off ebay and generally pay $20-25 a can.

I did get a partial cylinder way back for $100, during the winter.

It was maybe 9 pounds I forget.

I watched 2 sealed 30 pounders of 12 sell on ebay this past week. one went for 620 plus 45 shipping. the other I have to see what it went for. so you are doing well at 20-25/can.

apparently, there are reports of counterfeit freon. I picked up an open 30 pounder of 12 years ago. I guess the old cylinders didn't have a check valve preventing you from refilling a disposable cylinder. never tried it to know first hand. still haven't tapped into that cylinder to know if it's pure.

I've read it is manufactured 134 overseas and labeled R12.

You wouldn't think at this point there is enough profit in it.
