Hi all,

first post here and although I have a fairly broad automotive knowledge I'm green as green when it comes to 1G CRX's,

I've been reading plenty on here and researching like mad online but its all still new,

so go easy on me please :)

I very recently became the owner of a very very unloved car..... and I followed suit by leaving it in storage until I can make some space for it, so I don't have the car with me yet to get my teeth into.

anyway - my first questions

I believe the Car is a JDM import - as it has a JAP 9 digit vin starting AS********* and has a non vtec ZC 1.6 DOHC

First the engine - wiki says this;

  • 1984–1987 Power : 115 PS (85 kW) at 6,250 rpm; Torque : 99 lb·ft (13.7 kg/m, 134 Nm) at 5,500 rpm
  • 1988–1989 Power : 120 PS (88 kW) at 6,500 rpm; Torque : 103 lb·ft (14.0 kg/m, 137 Nm) at 5,500 rpm
  • 1988–1991 Power : 130 PS (96 kW) at 6,800 rpm; Torque : 106 lb·ft (14.7 kg/m, 144 Nm) at 5,700 rpm

whats the difference in this engine over the production years ?

next - my most important one - LSD - I NEEEED an LSD !

what are my options for getting a limited slip diff into this car ?

and last one for now - Front end Body Panels - what headlight/bumper/panels and or other parts will swap over from a 3g civic ?

Thanks for your help in educating me :)

Andy.

Welcome to the site.  I'm still a little green too, but I'll do my best to help you out.

No idea about the VIN or what engine you have.  If it's a DOHC 1.6 (ZC), then I think there are aftermarket LSD options out there.  Depending on how much you want to spend, see if Mfactory offers anything or if your more price conscious, check out OBX or the like.

As far as the body panel go, I know the fenders won't bolt right up.

Thanks for that I'll check them out...

With the fenders - won't bolt right up sounds like they are the same shape outside but with different mounting bolt positions..
If that's the case it would be okay for me - if could make it work, it's a race car so while I want it to look good it doesn't have to be perfect...

Also - I'm in Perth Australia

Any local members on here?

body fenders won't line up... they're completely different... bumpers are too big for the crx, and I think you can swap the headlights... are your recessed or flushmount?

the ZC motor you have is DOHC, and I believe it had to do with the work done to the head over the years...

Hi Andy

Being the dohc zc, you have a CG gearbox.  They are part of the lineage that went to the B series boxes, and the cable B lsd's will swap with some grinding of fins.  The syncro's and synchro springs are also interchangeable.  I've done the swap of lsd from CG to b series; and the swapping of synchro parts.  Have two of the CG 's open right now for synchro surgery.

I am in Perth - Ardross.  Love to meet up.  mob is 0410030038, but I don't have it in my ear all day.

We have some fibreglass fenders, door pods, side pods, and top of the front header panels (that one we may have to make). I  have some spare doors, bonnets,  glass, and rear hatch.  Front bumper  - I have one which I was looking to use on the kakaburra, but it it's really needed elsewhere to get a crx going I can consider it.

Be interested to see which car you picked up. There weren't a lot of zc gen 1's around, I know of 3 including the one I converted and which alrady has some fibreglass panels. As the second had a supercharger, you haven't got that one, so I suspect its #3 or a new one I haven't seen.

Awesome news guys
Thanks for that.....
Anjin, I'm away with work for the next 10 days but would be super keen to come say hello, check out your cars and pick your brains about a few things.....

As for the car I have bought - I wouldn't be so surprised that it's an unknown.....

It's no shiny street car.....

But a few of you may be interested with what I'm going to be doing with it.....

I'm a local boy who spent most of his life overseas pursuing a professional international career, I've now retired from that and returned home and have a 'real job' a wife and 2 kids, so I am trying to do what I did for a job in a very low key, low budget and fun way...

And weapon of choice for that turned out to be a gen 1 crx :-)

Chuck my name in google images and you should see where I'm going with this car.....

Cheers for the info so far guys, forums like this make everything so much easier...

That will be fine by me, very happy to meet up and talk.

I've just been fitting fenders and side skirts this afternoon. Interesting exercise, and while I've achieved a basic set-up there is a lot of fine tuning to be done. The fibreglass panels have been sitting around for about two years and are no longer willing to be finessed into place. Might have to heat treat it.

Need to clarify swapping synchros between cable B and CG boxes.  The small size will swap over - 3rd, 4th - but the larger ones won't - 1st and 2nd because the diameters are different.
