I was looking at engines for my car 85 rex HF. I decided maybe a tegra engine. is that possible, because i heard that my car can't handle the extra weight. do i have to get new engine mounts and new suspension, or what? I'm all new to this CRX Hybrid stuff

I know MangledCRX has a teg engine in his HF. I have one in my 85 DX. I can't think there is much difference. Is the HF FI or carbed? You can do it either way, but the carbed conversion is harder. Trust me on that one...

my car has a carb, no FI. Does that mean i have to get new wiring and computer? and what's an estimate of how long would it take?

Yes, you would definitely need a wiring harness and computer, among other things. My swap took me 6 months, but don't be scared, I didn't do any work on it for, like 3 of the 6 months. Most of the work was done the last 4 weeks or so, evenings and weekends whenever I could. Here is an e-mail I sent to someone who is also looking to do the same swap, but with a ZC engine:

>The fuel rail is attached to the motor, so you don't need to worry about
>that. Although, it is on the wrong side of the engine bay, so you have to
>extend the line across. You don't need the teg shift linkage per se. You
>can either extend the stock crx one about an inch or so like Rob did, or
>just use the stock CRX one as is, like I did. The difference being that the
>gear selection will take a while to get used to. 1st is where 2nd used to
>be, etc. As for the dash, if you use an SI wiring harness, you can use an
>SI gauge cluster, which will just bolt in. Other than that, no mods are
>necessary. Of course you can remove the choke! You will also need the teg
>rear engine mount, and keep your CRX front drivers side mount. You also
>need to notch out the timing belt cover where the CRX mount is, because it
>will push it in. Make sure you do it BEFORE you put the engine in, it's
>much easier. Trust me on that one...
>
>Here is a list of little things you will need:
>- upper teg rad hose (use the stock CRX lower)
>- teg/rex SI fuel filter
>- engine oil
>- tranny fluid
>- coolant
>- hose clamps
>- fuel injection line
>- fuel line clamps
>- timing belt
>- spark plugs
>- oil filter
>- re-re water pump
>- used/re-re teg hubs
>- re-ren teg axles
>- teg manual half-shaft (if the engine doesn't have one)
>- re-re teg calipers
>- new teg rotors
>- new teg brake pads
>
>Things to do if you want a really good front suspension:
>- new crx control arms
>- new teg inner and outer tie-rod's and ends
>- E/S master set of bushings
>- crx/teg front shocks
>
>I'm sure I am forgetting something, that's just off the top of my head.
>
>You don't have to use the ZC tranny, the teg one will work. I'm sure the
>gear ratios are different though. They are hard to find, so don't go nuts
>over it. If you can get a ZC ECU, do it, if not the teg 5spd will work. You
>will also need either a CRX SI, ZC, or teg vacuum box. I used the teg one,
>cause I had it. Rob could probably help out there.

>The last thing is, if you have rust, you should fix it before or during the
>swap.

I hope that helps.

Oh yeah, two more things: you will need a fuel pump from either a teg or SI, and the fuel-pickup assembly from an SI. The HF one is too small, and a teg one will not fit. Also, you will need a downpipe and some exhaust piping.

Ahh the good old MPFI swap into a 1st gen non-si yes i know this swap very well LOL Im doing it to another rex once again, hey i got it cheap but Im only going SOHC on this one.  The mounting for all three models are excactly the same the engine bolts right in as long as its a 1st gen teg or ZC wink wink tom :) I like the 1st gen ZC but I aint gonna mess wit it my teg engine runs too good.

Ok lemme verify some of this for you, its the front tranny mount bracket you need, the rear CRX mount bracket bolts up perfectly,  but the Front bracket will not.
Use the CRX Mount for the engine (my friend has the teg mount on his and it just dosent look like it sits right in the engine bay, Mine on the other hand looks normal cause I used the CRX mount and notched the cover which really isnt a big deal and should take 5 min at the most)

Good point about the rear mount. You can use either the teg or crx mount, my problem was I snapped off one of the bolts on the CRX mount that come up from the mount on the subframe, so I used the teg one instead. Then I ended up buying a brand new one from Acura because the rubber was torn on the one I had.

Hey Mangled, did I see that you ran a 14.9 in the teg/1G hybrid? Was that at a track? And what other mods have you got? I assume that was on street tires?

Also, when you are at say, 60MPH on the highway, what revs are you turning? Mine seems really high, I wanted to compare, and see if I'm way off on something, or if its normal.

Lastly, do you still want the bushing kit? I was going to bug you about it, but then 9/11 happened, and I didn't think it was appropriate at the time.

Thanks man

Yes Sir it sure was at the track,  and yes it was on street tires with a full interior I wanted to run it excactly as I do on the street.

I have a :
DC short shifter

2 1/4" custom catback (I really hate this system BTW , it sounds crappy) I want a Greddy though

Ground control coilovers and KYB GR2 struts

and thats all i can think of but I believe that's it, my friend has a 1st gen ZC in his rex and I can still pull him down with mine :)

oh yeah this isnt a speed mod but i have an '85 CRX Si guage cluster I like the 145  MPH speedo and I will peg it one day I already hit 140 MPH with it along side a porsche you shouldda seen the look on his face when he looked at his speedo and looked at the little shitbox right next to him I def wish i had a Camera.

as far as the Kit goes If you still have it after christmas Ill go for it, Money is very tight right now, I owe a friend 200 for a suit, 2 of my friends just got married, and i got christmas coming up.  what does the  kit consist of excactly?? And thank you for understanding that was the worst week of my life as far back as I can remember, b4 9/11 that sunday 9-9 My brother wakes me up and tells me that a good friend of mine was killed in a car accident, so I wake up on a sunday to "got bad News Rob Brian got killed early this morning" , then two days later I got woke up to "got bad news Rob, Theres no more twin towers"  I was like WTF is going on!!!??? It was just chaos and Now I find myself behind in my classes and Im struggling I just hope to get through this semester passing all my classes

What Tranny are you running?? I have a straight up teg driveline in mine 60 seems a little high but then again at 80 Im at about 4100 RPM's so I was wondering this myself.
I have a friend that had an '86 teg and he would always say that it seems like its revving high too and I thought he was crazy but now it seems like he has a valid arguement, but then again you gotta take into consideration that the engine revs high anyhow

Cool. My exhaust it like 1 7/8" so it may be restricting me a bit. Do you have a full exhaust? I have the cat, resonator, and muffler. I also have the DC short shifter, although I usually bang the synchros on the 2->3 if I'm hard on it.

The kit has the following (from the E/S site): HYPER-FLEX SYSTEM Complete Master Bushing Set Includes: front and rear control arm bushings, front and rear sway bar bushings and end links, transmission shifter stabilizer bushings (manual transmission only), ball joint and tie rod end boots.

I got new front control arms and tie-rod ends, so I didn't use the boots. I haven't done the rear yet, but the front is sweet now! New everything, practically.

No problem if you want to wait, I understand completely.

As for the revs, I am the same, at 80, I'm turning about that also, maybe a bit more. From what I've heard, it's normal, but it just seems so high.

HI Tom.  You had the 2nd gen teg right.  If I remember correctly, my 2nd gen was at about 4000rpm at 120km's.  Seems your about right to me.  That way your still in the power band if you want to get on it.  I'm looking forward to a ride.  How goes the interior?  Later..........

1st Gen teg, not second. I'll let you take her for a rip...the interior hasn't changed much, I just put some foam down to keep a bit of the road noise out. I had to silicone the sunroof, my passenger seat was soaking wet yesterday morning. I mean completely drenched. It's still pretty damp, a day and a half later.
