The one 87 Civic race car has developed a new problem this year.  When at high RPM 6000+

it pops out of 4th gear on deacelleration only.  I have tried

1 Replacing the synchros and slider hub

2 Replacing the shift linkage

3 Replacing the transmission

4 A lot of swearing

The drver has been one hand steering and holding the shifter, but it is gettin old

None of the above have cured the problem.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Maurice

Maurice,

How are the motor mounts?  If the motor is rotating a lot it can cause the problem you are describing.

"The Driver"...sounds like you better make her happy... :D

You would be correct,  good to hear from you.  I repaced the mounts at the rear and the transmission side, but I have not thougth about the front mount

I hope that works

By the way have you any Houseman ring and pinions laying around?

Don't know if this helps, seeing you replaced the transmission.  I had this problem with a B series box.  It was worn synchro springs. They were well on the way to square instead of round, and no longer locked in the slider hub.

Maurice, I had a similar issue at Road Atlanta last year. I found the front motor mount (the one below #1 cylinder) hanging onto the block with ONE bolt! Fixed that (and checked the other two) and it was fine. I've also never had that issue with fourth gear either, primarily third or second.

You said you replaced the motor mounts, are you still using the stock rubber ones? I've filled all of mine, not with urethane though, just some RTV. It's not as stiff as the urethane but definitely firms them up noticeably.

I just thought of this, check the shifter stay rod both front and rear, particularly the rear. During accel/decel transition as you know, if there is any binding it 'could' cause the shifter to pull on the joint. if it doesn't move it could cause it to pull on the actual shift rod. Just a thought.

If you love the Elise, drive a Se7en - Caterham or whatever...
It has even less content than the Elise, is less graceful looking
...and changes direction like a ping pong ball whacked by Thor.

Jay  I will be replacing the top front mount tonight.  I had replaced the other 2 with mounts I modified with butyl rubber to make them more solid

I should have done all 3 :o

Just an idea... Block and tranny gas struts if gtpilot is on the money.

Free will means taking full responsibility for everything we think, feel and do.

Once we give up taking full-responsibility for our real lives we have given over our real lives to third party's to take responsibility, often to men and women who are complete strangers to us, our families, our communities and our natural environment.

When we RE-PRESENT what is not PRESENT to the PRESENCE of LIFE we are creating, committing, supporting and condoning fraud.

TRUTH is where the presence of LIFE is always present.

FREE SPEECH without respect = HATE SPEECH.

Finally after 2 years of chasing this though 3 transmissions I found that the shift lever was bent below the shift ball.

Found it when putting in one of Cedda's shift bushing kits (great kit !!!)

How did it happen?  Probably when the shift lever was heated and bent to allow the driver better reach several years ago

Just a FYI
